I'm not questioning the trope but do you have examples of media where it happens? I can't think of anything
On the top of my head...
1. Barbie Diaries: watched this movie when I was a a little kid. Barbie’s character has a crush on this guy in school, which is really cool and nice and they actually hit it off well, and she believes he is the secret admirer who’s been writing love letters to her all along. Things happen, her and her crush go to the prom and dance together, the look cute and all, but then he tells her that he’s not the secret admirer, so she puts together 2+2, leaves the poor guy’s ass on the dance floor just to go to her best friend and kiss him, despite never showing any interest toward him. 11 years old me HATED that ending.
2. Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!: It’s about a young woman who wins a date with her celebrity crush, and while the guy is kinda rude at first, she manages to make him fall in love with her, and he’s actually really cute with her, but then she finds out that her friend was in love with her all along and she just lives her boyfriend to run to him for a kiss. Like, I could understand her leaving her celebrity crush after finding out that he was just a crush and nothing else, but her ending up with the best friend was just BS, because she never really liked him in the first place.
3. 13 going on 30: While it doesn’t fit what I described perfectly, I’m still annoyed by the overall message surrounding the idea of the girl having to end up with the best friend because he is a “nice guy” and he was “the right choice all along”, despite her never having any feeling for him prior to being forced to develop some thanks to some contrived circumstances.
Is just, they keep prioritizing the guy’s feeling over what the girl actually wants, and it’s really frustrating when you watch it happen.
