Reverse Mulan plot bunnies
"Reverse Mulan" would be really cool, only there's one problem. I just can't decide how I'd want it to be written. I mean, what if it's about a young man/boy runs away from home--- to escape an impending marriage, or perhaps because he feels more comfortable in a woman's role. A young woman (whether or not she knows of his identity is debatable) teaches him the tasks of a woman in ancient china, the customs and skills that he would need to know in order to fit into society as a woman. Does he marry her? Does she perhaps feel more comfortable as a man? Or perhaps they leave society all together and live in the mountains together. (Of course, another question to ask is whether homosexuality would be legal in that period. Perhaps they would not have to hide at all.) I really love this one... Of course, maybe he doesn't marry the other woman, and instead falls in love with a man--- a general, perhaps? Or a farmer? And then, the same questions must be asked: does he marry this man as a woman or not? Another version could be of a young man who disguises himself as a woman to save his younger sister from an arranged marriage, and unexpectedly falls in love with his groom. And I mean, these are just the ones I've thought of so far. I'm sure there are many more plots that could work! And I can't help what other people would think of if someone told them to write a "reverse Mulan."
