Remember to leave the Declaration of Independence out for Ben Gates tonight
And also some pizza for Riley
he’s my national treasure for real
Yes it's a meme, and a pretty fun one, but "National Treasure" does do something I find genuinely important with its quirky hacker comic relief support character of Riley (Justin Bartha), which is simple yet all-too-often overlooked: It lets him have a win. The film rattles along with Meme Machine Benjamin Gates (Nic Daddy Cage) solving puzzles and riddles with the aid of new buddy Abigail Chase (har-har, played by Diane Kruger, nice!) and generally being the smartest protagonist guy with a wise cracking sidekick who is the butt of most of the jokes in Riley. But then Riley solves that riddle about daylight-savings time, albeit after relishing a little bit that he knows than his smug buddy, and is more than just "goofy wisecracking computer man". It adds layers to his character, but also moves the plot forward (they believed the chase was over at this point) and shows a purpose for having him there rather than "har-har, it funny when smart-alec nerdy computer man is wrong", which would get exceedingly old in other films and shows. I just like it, it's nice.
