Robin Pecknold/fleet foxes covering songs by women my beloved:
Edited to add:
Song: Robin Pecknold (feat. Ed Droste) - I’m Losing Myself
Sam Hazeldine used this song once for a social media post, without naming it. I liked that song and looked it up.
It’s a sad song, unsurprisingly.
What else is sad? The state of the world, for sure. The movie Learning to Breathe (2016) is sad, too. It’s an indie movie by Dan Turner that’s beautifully shot, with a slim plot, occasional plot holes, and intense acting, which is carried by Sam Hazeldine and a curious blend of fictional and non-fictional elements.
It’s an uplifting watch for people who like to look really closely at the raw emotional turmoil of others. Which isn’t necessarily me. I wasn’t keen on revisiting the mental and emotional space of the difficult and painful separations I lived through.
If I could ask Sam Hazeldine, I’d like to know how he survived making this movie in 2014, when I barely survive watching him in this. Honestly, I have so many questions about it. Why doesn’t he promote it more? Has he ever? Was this cathartic filmmaking and for whom? He’s very believably heartbroken and unraveling in this; it’s tough. It’s devastating. I’m actually sorry for him, not his character Noah. For Noah, too, but that guy has some issues to work through.
So yeah, this is a fun movie for masochists or people who’re fatalistic about romantic relationships, especially the heteronormative model. For fans of real life actor couples exploring the darkest shadows of their relationship onscreen as fictitious couples before eventually deciding to separate themselves. And a good excuse for relationship-avoidant introverts who think they’re better off alone in their headspace anyway. I mean, there’s a point there, maybe.
