“Sam, I can't believe how far you've come, and you know I'm proud of you...but do you really think you can take on multiple demons at the same time?”
Sam ignored her, sitting on the edge of the bed. He always felt guilty after he slept with Ruby—not that the sex wasn't incredible, but still. She was a demon.
He shook off that attitude. She was helping him. He needed her.
“If I'm ever going to take on Lilith, I'd better be able to handle a few lower level demons at one time. Besides, I've got the knife...and you.”
Ruby smiled, leaning down slightly to kiss Sam, then walked across the room. “Yes, you do.”
Sam's stomach growled, and Ruby laughed, “let's get some food. I'll order a pizza.”
There was knock at the door, and Ruby went to answer it. It didn't really matter to her if the pizza delivery guy got a look at her host's body in underwear and a tank top—Sam was hungry and she'd probably get a laugh at the pizza guy's face.
But when she opened the door, Dean Winchester was on the other side.
Holy shit. He was in Hell. He was supposed to be in Hell. Lilith's plan was clear—Ruby would help lead Sam to embrace his powers, help him kill Lilith to let Lucifer free. Sam's motivation was revenge for Dean's death.
But he was standing right here. Next to a guy that Ruby remembered vaguely from her first introduction to Sam—Bobby Singer. She could clearly see that neither of them were possessed.
Fuck. What—shit, don't blow cover. That was rule one. Ruby had been chosen for this job because she could maintain her cover.
“So, where is it?”
“Where is what?”
“The pizza that takes two guys to deliver?” Maybe she could chase him off—buy some time to adjust the plan before Sam knew Dean was back topside.
How did this happen. Damned souls didn't get to come back from Hell. Especially not while still human and not demon. Especially not in their own undamaged bodies.
“I think we've got the wrong room.”
“Hey, is--” Sam, shit, he saw them.
He couldn't take his eyes off them. His heart rate jumped, his breath stuttered.
Dean back—this was going to be a distraction that they couldn't afford. The plan had been working! Damn it!
“Heya Sammy.”
Ruby moved aside, thoughts racing as Dean walked into the motel room. How-how-how could this have happened?
Then Sam was on the attack, a knife aimed at his brother's throat and the older man, Singer, was holding him back. Ruby let out a little yell as she was pushed into the door roughly.
“Who are you!” Sam didn't believe.
“Like you didn't do this!” Dean was angry, accusing.
If they didn't trust each other maybe Ruby could use it to drive them apart.
“Do what?!” Sam was incensed. He wouldn't even look at her. She had thought she had him trained to always take cues from her. Dean was already getting in the way.
“It's him! It's him, Sam! I've been through this already, it's really him.” Singer was pulling him away, keeping him back. Sam was in so much shock, he wasn't even using his powers—another part of her training going to waste. He was strong, but his powers were stronger. He had to start using them first.
Sam started to believe, started to relax. The anger being replaced with confusion, then relief.
Ruby could see how it rocked him—Dean being back.
He shrugged out of Bobby's arms as Dean quipped, “I know. I look fantastic, huh?”
Then the two of them were hugging. Ruby wanted to throw Dean across the room, snap his neck, and be done with it.
But Sam would kill her for that. And all her plans would go to waste anyway.
Don't blow cover. Number one rule.
She'd play the dumb bimbo hook up. Sam was smart—he'd catch on.
“So, are you two like...together?”
“What?” Ruby practically saw the light bulb flash over his head as Sam looked at her for the first time since this disaster started. “No, no..he's my brother.”
Ruby was right. Sam was smart.
“Oh—got it, I-I guess. Look, I should probably go.” Ruby caught Sam's eye, silently telling him she'd be back when he was alone.
“Yeah, yeah, that's probably a good idea. Sorry.” He smiled awkwardly. He was a better actor than Ruby had ever given him credit for.
She got dressed while Dean oogled her backside.
As she walked out, she continued the charade for Dean and Bobby's benefit...and for her cover.
“So call me.”
Sam played along, having pulled on a white over shirt. “Yeah, sure thing, Kathy.”
Ruby let the smile fall off her face a bit, acting disappointed, “Kristy.”
Sam smiled again, obviously uncomfortable with the role she had cast him in, “right.”
The door shut and Ruby left on a mission for answers.
How was Dean back?
And what did this mean for her and Lilith's plans for Sam?
This little drabble is a response to the gif submission from @waywardjoy. I’m all about canon style, so I kept it as accurate to the scene in “Lazarus Rising” as I could--but from Ruby’s perspective this time. I hope you enjoyed this!
