Life keeps going. Time is always passing. No matter how much we want to stop and celebrate or mourn, moments come and go, slipping by.
I am running, expecting to go a long distance. My parents who go from carrying me to teaching me to crawl, walk, and finally run start with me. Siblings, friends, and my spouse join me somewhere on my path.
I keep pushing forward, aware of the people beside me, in front of me, behind me but altogether with me.
But when people start dropping from the run, will I have the strength to keep running? Will I be able to keep my eyes forward, to stay steady on my path, and continue on with those still here with me?
My eyes will be diverted, will be clouded with tears, will continue to look for the residual presence of those I miss. I will scream at time to stop its continuous flow, to let me go back to when I wasn't deprived or cheated of the people I love and care about.
Regardless of my pleas, I will continue along this path, crawling if I had to. Time will not cease for my sadness, for my selfishness. It hurts to be without people who have passed from this run, but I know that time will numb this pain and that all I am left with are memories.
I also know that one day, people will notice that I too have stopped running, that I have reached my finish line. And maybe I too will live on in their minds as a distant thought.
