Even in spring the previous season’s stems of Salvia 'Blue Spire' (perovskia, Russian sage) still provide interest. This small, upright deciduous sub-shrub has white stems which have aromatic grey-green leaves. There are spikes of small, violet-blue flowers in late summer and autumn. It will thrive on a dry, chalky soil and with salt-laden air.

Russian Sage. This is in full bloom and the bees are loving it. This vibrant shade of purple really stands out in the garden this time of year, even against the (mostly) green of the lawn and leaves around it. The grey foliage adds a nice contrast too.
