There’s a fox that comes into our garden sometimes. the first time we saw it, it slunk in from the back, and began stalking the pheasant hanging around under the bird feeder. around and around the coop they went, and because the pheasant was a big boy and the fox was little, it rapidly became apparent that neither was quite sure who was stalking who. after a while, the pheasant gives up and flies off, and the fox sits down and stares after it like it’s been personally wronged.

Now we put eggs out for it and I finally understand the evolutionary process by which my dog can steal them.
