It Was Cold Out

“I should have pushed you off that ledge.”

The statement rang through Jaw’s mind. Blurred his vision. Made him feel dizzy.

“Rusty..” he choked out, his knees buckling beneath him. He collapsed, the cold stone biting his hands as he tried to steady himself. “Rusty, I’m sorry—please come back—”

“You were supposed to protect me.”

Jaw’s eyes filled with tears. He’d tried to save her. Of course he did! Rusty taught him how to feel; she taught him that not everything that happened was his fault—

But she’d lied.

Right to his face.

“I’m so cold.”

“Rusty, I’m sorry,” Jaw choked, shutting his eyes as tears streaked down his cheeks. “It’s my fault. Y-you’re right, it’s all my f-fault.”

Jaw’s arms gave out.

He curled up on the ice-cold stone, shivers beginning to wrack his frame as he quietly sobbed.

It was over.
