Archie noticed her lights flick on around the same time he got home. After Veronica had left him standing alone in the parking lot he’d called his dad to come pick him up. Fred had obviously heard his distress over the phone since he had that expression upon pulling up. He didn’t press Archie to talk about what happened, thankfully. He’d known things were going smoothly between his son and Veronica so it probably wasn’t hard to connect the dots. 

Noticing her through the window Archie tried to read the expression with which she regarded him. Sad or calculating, each looking at each other like they were trying to decipher a puzzle. After a second he grabbed his phone.

[ text: Betts ] hey. I didn’t see you leave the bar. 

[text: Betts ] did you get a ride home with your mom or Jug?

They are the first thing the other reaches for; alone on the desolate bridge, besides Sheriff Kellar and the dead serial killer lying on the wet pavement. Less than ten minutes ago he thought a tearful Betty was the last thing he was going to see. Two minutes ago he was about to pull the trigger. She smells like petrichor and perfume, but feels real when nothing else does. Is she shaking too or are his hands still trembling from holding the gun?

“Hey -- it’s okay, alright? It’s over now. I promise. It’s over.”

“Ronnie ... ” 

There’s a pause after the endearment. He looks up from the notebook he’s scrawling lyrics in when he says her name. Most refer to her by her full name: Veronica or V. Archie doesn’t think he’s heard anyone call her Ronnie except for himself. Although some had adopted ARCHIEKINS ( Cheryl mostly or Jughead when he is being sarcastic ) it really only stuck with Veronica. Although it had left a quizzical expression his face the first time he’d heard it, Archie warmed up to the nickname. She says it like it’s something special. Like she thinks he is.  

It’s quiet until he speaks besides the crackling of the fire. She’s curled up at the edge of the couch reading a book he doesn’t know the title to. Her glasses always look so cute, but he recalls she’d said something along the lines of I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing them in school. 

“Can I ask you about something?” It’s sounds stupid saying that out loud. She’s his girlfriend; he doesn’t need to preface a question, but this particular one calls for it. “It’s just -- Reggie said this thing the other day and... y’know, nevermind. Forget it, it’s fine.”

Archie will never know if he would have pulled that trigger or not. Maybe he’ll spend the rest of his life laying awake at night reliving that last moment: half a second more and would the bullets in the Black Hood’s chest be from his own gun and not the sheriff's? 

Betty looks away from the lifeless man before he does. It’s only her movement that drags his eyes away to his best friend. If everything is over why does it still feel chaotic? His mind hasn’t caught up to his body yet; adrenaline still keeping his chest heaving for air from the run.

“Betty -- ” 

They balance each other out with a tight embrace. They only have a sort of morbid peace before the back up officers and ambulances arrive along with thier parents. Archie isn’t doing her a service by wiping at her tears, earth and rain covered fingers swiping away the salty trails down her cheeks. “I’m sorry you had to...I’m so sorry.”

Pitkins Park was chilly with the fall weather, but not enough to ward off passersby. He found her on a park bench shortly after he finished practice with the football team at Southside High. He recognized a few faces from when they team had gone up against Riverdale except now he was on the other end. He hadn’t been put through thier own team’s hazing, but it must not be far off.

Archie caught her chin gently with his thumb and crooked fingers to inspect her face.“What’s this?” Her lip bears a bright red cut that wasn’t there yesterday. “You throwing fisticuffs, Betts?”

Archie touched Veronica's arm once Josie and the girls had disappeared down the street in a Lodge family car to take Cheryl home.

"Are you okay?" Veronica's hair and clothes were all in place, but that didn't mean she was alright. "He didn't try something on you did he?"

“I’m sorry Betty, I tried not be harsh, but he wouldn’t believe me. He wouldn’t let go without a broken heart.”

“So, what -- ?”

The agenda of breaking Jughead’s heart for Betty ( for his own safety from the Black Hood ) altered when the other teenagers appeared outside the trailer. Jughead had practically shoved her off the front steps at seeing her. He’d known they were coming?

Sweet Pea habitually appeared to be the leader of the leather clad group. Whether or not he was Archie didn’t know. She narrowed her gaze at him and noted the black eye; a parallel to the one she had sported at the beginning of school. Her athletic career was fighting boys, she didn’t let it intimidate her. Even if it should. RECKLESS.

“You didn’t get enough of a fight the other night; you came here looking for one too?’
