Did you know, that no matter how hard you try, it’s nearly impossible to tell one section of forest from another? And true to theory, Merlin was no different. About thirty miles back he began nicking trees with a small knife to tell when he’s passed one. Unfortunately, that meant he could very clearly see his failures as he passed a tree with five, yes, five, small nicks taken out of the bark. How he managed to walk around the same square feet of forest for hours, he’ll never know. Blame it on exhaustion or dumb luck - emphasis on dumb. The warlock let out a growl as he kicked at said tree and fell to his knees. He’d left Salem hours ago, and all he had to show for it was severely torn trousers, bloody knees, and a worse sense of direction than he started with.
He had been so close before - he felt it. He felt Arthur. Their bond was so much deeper than flesh of man. How else had he known Arthur needed him, centuries ago, when Merlin was half-lucid poisoned by the Morteus Flower? He thought he could smell something burning, flesh, maybe? The phantom breath of Salem’s magic crusade. It was like the itch the smell of cinnamon gives you. It almost tickles your nose, but really it’s like a bunch of little ants nibbling. He scratched at his nostrils idly.
Merlin still had nightmares about being burned at the pyre.
He hammered his fists into the mud, looking for something, anything, for his restless body to do.
With a new found sense of determination, he ran. Wind whipping his face, making his cheeks red with exertion and wind-burn. He panted but didn’t stop. He couldn’t. If running toward his death meant saving these people than he’d do it. There was no glory to be had here, not this time. He had to do it now, before Arthur was lost for good, before Arthur’s life was anything but safe. He wouldn’t let the other missing loved ones down. He wouldn’t let his destiny down. He wouldn’t - couldn’t - let his King down.
Arthur believed in him, more than he would ever believe in himself. But that was enough.
His adrenaline spiked and he was running again.
