Tips to reduce plastic usage and keep plastic from entering the ocean
1. Get a reusable water bottle, single use water bottles are used briefly and amount to a lot of floating plastic in our bodies of water.
2. Avoid face and body washes with little beads in it for exfoliating, these are microplastics that are extremely harmful, are difficult to filter out before entering water and are very easily consumed by marine life.
3. Stop sucking! Ask for your drink at a restaurant without a plastic straw, these are unnecessary items that are harmful to marine life. A new shocking discovery states that you can drink your beverages without a straw, amazing! If you can’t stop sucking purchase reusable straws, my favorite is a bamboo straw which is sturdy and biodegradable, another good option is to use stainless steel straws which are durable and can be thrown in the dishwasher.
4. Bring your own reusable bag to the store. Another unnecessary plastic item that we use for 20 minutes to transport into the car then into the house then into the garbage can. Unnecessary and wasteful.
5. When you are unable to avoid using plastics, especially single use plastics, make sure you are recycling properly. Look for the recycling symbol on the bottom of a product, if it is a plastic it can most likely be recycled. Take the extra few seconds to separate your trash from your recycling, it adds up.
