Life is complex. Recently, I read in the news that there is hope and possible evidence life was present in mars before earth was considered hospitable for life.
Today, Mars is considered one of the most inhospitable planet for humans. It's super cold, the average surface temperature is -85°F (-63°C). During the summer highs, the temperature can reach 86°F (30°C); it has a rocky surface, it's super dry and carbon dioxide (CO2) makes up 95.3% of Mars volume. To make a comparison, the current level on CO2 on Earth is 0.04% and that's the highest level we've had since the 18 Century which was 0.028%. Now, can you imagine trying to breathe on Mars? 😮💨😵💫😵 it would be an imminent death ☠
Also Mars' atmosphere doesn't have a way to protect its surface from ultraviolet exposure from the sun like the Earth's atmosphere, which has a natural barrier that protects the planet from harsh UV radiation. If an electromagnetic field still does exist on Mars, then it's very thin or weak. That means the planet is constantly bombarded by extreme levels of radiation.
But how did Mars lose its natural electromagnetic field? It is quite possible it happened gradually billions of years ago due to chemical changes in its core; meaning the temperature imbalances made the planet to turn cold leading to the loss of its magnetosphere. Eventually the shield protecting the planet shut down or gradually got weak, causing the slow collapse of the planet, evaporating its lakes and destroying any form of life that once sustained.
It would be nearly impossible to build an artificial electromagnetic field to sustain life in Mars or reverse it back; And perhaps what happen to Mars is part of a natural selection process in the universe and the planet is doomed to be inhospitable without having that natural protection against the sun.
Could this happen to earth? It could very much happen. How? Anything that would disrupt Earth's magnetic field and its core balance would likely trigger a mass extinction event on Earth similar to Mars. It's a matter of time to find out.
However recent studies from NASA and its rovers, Curiosity and Perseverance, had shed new evidence that proves it's very possible that Mars was hosting life at some point in time, now fully extinct.
Evidence #1. Yellow Sulfur Crystals
This is groundbreaking discovery that just happened on July 2024. Curiosity rover found pure Sulfur by accidentally cracking a rock. This is an element very present on Earth and you can find it predominately in hot springs and volcanic regions and it forms when water evaporates on the surface. Sulfur is an essential element for all life on Earth. Which means that there is strong evidence that there was life on Mars too.
Also Perseverance rover found 90% pure silica; a compound of the two most abundant elements in Earth's crust, silicon and oxygen (SiO2). This element is usually found here on Earth around hot springs or hot steam of water.
Evidence #2. Rocks With Halos
Curiosity rover discovered rocks with pale rings, or halos, near their edges while exploring Gediz Vallis channel on Mars similar to the process when groundwater leaks into rocks here on Earth causing a chemical reaction that changes the rocks' color.
Evidence #3. Eleven Years ago Curiosity rover found volcanic minerals
While exploring an area called Séítah, the rover took samples of a mineral called Olivine then found Pyroxene which are naturally found in volcanoes indicating there was volcanic activity and liquid water on Mars. The rover also found Plagioclase feldspar which is a common mineral on Earth. Scientists believe the material originated from volcanic activity, possibly when lava flowed onto the planet's surface.
Curiosity also found Blackthorn salt. They believe it formed out of minerals that precipitated from ancient water mixed with Martian rocks. It was discovered near the Gale crater which scientists believe was a lake that formed salt deposits.
Those are exciting discoveries because it can give us a clue of what happened to Mars before life went extinct. Definitely it would take years of research to have a full map of the evolution of life and its extinction process.
One thing is for sure, life on Mars would be almost impossible to recreate and exploring the possibility would be challenging but definitely we can use Mars as a lesson and learn from its fall so we can take precautions and steps to prevent that here on planet Earth.
