Re. the new person worried about being harassed and called a fag if they join the marching band. I understand it's terrible but being called names isn't the worst thing that can happen to you. And unfortunately there are almost always jerks like that, especially in high school. And are you going to let them keep you from doing something you really like and are good at? Plus at the end you'll potentially have dozens of talented friends while they'll just have their small gang of jerks.

The returning section leader should keep in mind he or she is older and more experienced, and possibly physically bigger, this year and knowing that and having or projecting extra confidence from that might all help to get the new freshman to behave properly. Asking the sophomores for help with that might help as well, or could lead them to causing more trouble so it's a bit of a risk.

Sadly, I don’t live anywhere near the US so no I’m not going.  Just had a quick google though, looks pretty cool! (and now i’m jealous haha)
