My little twins are all grown up! I still remember how tiny they were when we brought them home - well, Reuben still is quite tiny, compared to his brothers. Maybe that’s why he’s never found himself a girlfriend ... with his braces off now he may have more luck. 

He’s told me that he plans to continue Salim’s Captain Maxis series, as Salim wanted. I can’t say I’m happy about it...but he’s always lived half in our world and half in the world of those books, so I know it’s the right move for him. 

Flora has been threatening for a while now to run off and join her penpal-boyfriend Dino out in the woods. Again, I don’t think it’s a very good choice to make. But she’s my daughter, and I know that saying no would only push her away ... at least if I say yes and let her leave, she might come back again at some point.

Our Christmas celebrations were as lively as they come, with myself and Diego, the four kids, Tony’s wife and little Marty all together on Christmas morning. The whole apartment was full of Christmas music and laughter - it was like a damn Hallmark card.

Lynne sent season’s greetings by card, and called me on Christmas day to update me on their celebrations and Lois, back in Evergreen Harbour. Lois recently became a grandmother as well, with her daughter Lisa marrying a man named Christian and having a little girl named Lorraine. Lynne’s kids, Val and Warren, haven’t married off yet, but Lynne is hopeful that she’ll have some grandbabies to coddle soon enough. In the mean time, I told her she can borrow Marty when I get tired of the crying.

Antonio and Callia have a little one now - Marty. Ant brought him by today for a visit with grandma. He was so shy at first, but once his dad left he warmed up and was a perfect angel all day long. He also got a chance to play with Uncle Cosme, and to try one of my casseroles. By the time Ant came to pick him up, he didn’t want to leave!

It’s hard to believe I’m a grandma now... but I couldn’t ask for a sweeter grandchild to have.

Dear Diary,

A boy from the hippie camp gave me an address to reach them at before Tony dragged me away...his name is Dino. He’s so different from boys at my school. I can tell him things in letters that I could never tell any of them...or even my friends. Like how I want to leave the city behind and never look back, but I’m scared to be without my family. Or how I want to do something in the world, really do something, and not just be a cog in society. Or how I think his long hair is...really cute. 

He always addresses his letters to Flora, not Flo. He told me it’s a beautiful name - like flora and fauna, like flowers, like the wildflowers that he’d tuck behind my ear if I was with him at the park. I blushed so hard when I read that. I think he wants me to join them out there in the woods. And I want that too...

Cosme just turned eighteen. He’s complimented his newly grown moustache by refusing to cut his hair. It’s been a long time coming - he’s never liked haircuts. Unlike Ant, he doesn’t have plans to move out and get married. It’s easier with him here since we both commute to the diner nearby. I do worry about him...but he seems happy.

Salim sent over about 10 boxes full of notes and half-finished manuscripts, and expects Benny to reshape them into new Captain Maxis books. The kid comes home from school and goes straight to his room to work, he stays up past midnight, he barely eats. He says he loves the work, but he’s too young to be put through this. So I went to Salim’s apartment to tell him off.

Salim wanted to kiss and make up after our fight, but that’s not going to work this time. Whatever has been going on between us all these years, I called it off. I can’t love a man who treats my son like this. 

When I got home, I told Ben that he couldn’t work for Mr. Benali anymore. I knew he would be mad about it. But I didn’t imagine how mad. He exploded at me, telling me that it’s what he wants to do and he’s lucky that the Salim Benali even wants his help. It hurts to see him angry like this. But I know that in time, he’ll realize I’m protecting him.

Dear Diary, 

I went on a solo hike at the park today, and came across some hippies protesting against the planned construction at the park. The government is going to build new roads and lodges, and that means cutting down trees. They told me all about how old these trees are, and how important they are for the forest, and asked if I wanted to join their cause. Of course I did!!

After a couple hours, we took a break to eat lunch (I tried tofu!) and smoke some grass. I was having a great time...until Tony showed up, looking for me. He wasn’t very happy when he saw what I was getting up to.
