So I go to the beach at low tide, and all the birds are out feasting on crabs and snails, and since I currently have LotR on the brain due to reading it to my kid, I find Galadriel's words to Legolas running through my mind: "If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more" (JRR Tolkien, The Two Towers, Book 3, Chapter 5, "The White Rider").
So I think of all the longing and grief wrapped up in the elves' call to the sea, to go into the west and return to Valinor.
And then I think of seagulls.
So mystical, so alluring.
