How can it be possible that no one loves this ship?
This is really something that drives me mad.
When I finished seeing season 5 for the very first time (bingewatching it in only two days aka late nights) , I rushed to ao3 with the absolute certainty I would have found dozen of fics about them.
Instead not only was there none, but on reddit I even figured out that people hated her, the cruelest ones also dared to call her ugly (WHAT?? Oh c'mon, Madeline is stunning!!) and her character stupid and meaningless.
Excuse me?!
From now, since this could be a spoiler for someone who still has to see season 5 I'll put my considerations under
(SPOILERS)

Okay, I've loved her since the very first sentence she said in episode 5x1, but when we reached 5x6 where everything was explained, I was practically howling at the screen.
Bronte was stalking Joe and not the other way around.
She was a step ahead and when he checked her social networks they were the FAKE ones.
She made him think he had everything under his control.
Bronte played Joe's game, with the only difference that she played it a lot better.
But what I love the most about her?
She wanted to set Joe up, but fell in love with him in the process and she hadn't seen it coming.
The more her friends - a point I agree on with everyone, they are really unbearable! I hate them all, LOL - cheered because they were close to make Joe fall in their trap, the more she didn't want it to happen.
The end of 5x6 is a jewel because we see Bronte terrified when Joe finds the hidden camera and speaks to her, very pissed off... and yet she's so thrilled that in 5x7 she looks for him again and tells her friends off.
Another thing I love is how Louise figures out that she was sure she invented Bronte to lure Joe in, but it isn't a charade at all, she is EXACTLY the Bronte she pretended to be.
And season1/4! Joe probably would never forgive someone who lied to him and decived him so badly ... but not season 5! Joe, not after Bronte left such a mark on him (although he's supposed to be the vampire, LOL) , not after such a deep connection.
They were together in fantasies, in their pages and in those moments of real life.
They were bound on so many levels.
And I've never seen Joe so so so so so in love, probably only with Love in the early episodes on season 2, but Bronte was something more.
They were soulmates for real.
in 5x8 (my fave episode ever in the whole show) Bronte reached her delusional peak, thinking she had fixed Joe, althogh the scene in the cage is pure perfection, emotional peak, she really read him like no one else had ever done before and I was beyond love for this ship.
Then the authors decide to destroy what this ship could have been from the second part of 5x9 on... but in 5x10 after the tragic last phone call with Henry... even Penn in an interview said that in that moment Bronte/Louise still loved Joe, despite everything.. and it was so clear.
And even their very last scene together, when the policemen part them and take them away… the way they stare at each other…
It won’t ever be over between them, that’s why I’ll never forgive the authors for making Louise says in the epilogue ‘just some a**hole I dated.’, it’s totally OOC after the deeply emotional way she was invested in him.
And I haven't even babbled about the beautiful moments and speeches between them in episode 5x4 and 5x5.
And yeah, I know that Joe is a wicked character and blah blah blah, but:
- he’s fictional
-he’s ten thousands times better than book! Joe
-he killed some very ruthless people
That’s why I really wished something better for him, Bronte could have been his happy ending, at least she is in my fics.
And sure, I could do some fan service and write about Joe/Beck, Joe/Love, Joe/OC/reader and increase my views and popularity, but nope, thanks, those ships are not my cup of tea.
I must write about characters I love, even if this brings to have the most saddening stats ever.
some things i thought about when finishing season 2 of interview with the vampire
CLAUDIA AND LOUIS have such a fucking unique dynamic and i think the tv show explored it so excellently. their relationship is so unique you cant really put a word to besides some twisted, vampiric father-daughter, brother-sister bond. claudia's character is explored in this context so much more beautifully then how the movie did. the movie made her seem so.. unnatural, even in this supernatural context that is the vampire chronicles. the tv show excellently showed her evolution of character: from her creation (still being truly a child, mentally and physically), showing the depression she got realizing her body would never match the maturity of her mind and the mania that came with those feelings, the resentment of her guardians, knowing they knew she would forever be a confused woman in the body of a teenage girl, to her running away, becoming independent and becoming far more mature than she would have been in those seven years if she had spent them with louis and lestat, returning to take louis off to europe with her, finalizing the development of louis in her mind, who she once saw as a father, she now sees as a brother. i love her dearly and she deserved a life with madeleine, if not just voiding her experience with the dark gift altogether. im not sure if her never becoming a vampire at all would be a better path for her, but im sure it would be less grieving
the show basically sets you up to appreciate armand and hate lestat, but as louis recalls the story, with the help of molloy, brings the truth to light and kind of flips the point of the rest of the story told in that season at the last second
there is no single character in this show that is either completely good or bad (morally grey?) (scratch that, this mainly applies to the vampires, as i can see molloy being an ultimately good-natured character). maybe its just the way the story's told, but theres a time you will hate every character, at least once. you love armand then learn to hate him. and vice versa with lestat! (at least, this is how i felt)
this show has broken and built me back up in a single episode
Ok, so new things we learned about Bumblebee's mysteries under the cut.
Ghost knew he wasn't dead and probably just hiding.
Agent Schloder said he was an Autobot deserter, which we know isn't true since Optimus and other Autobots are acting normal around him. (pretty sus if you ask me)
Also, now that I think about it, no Autobot nor Decepticons seems to be suprise to see him in any of the two part of the season. So watherver Bumblebee did to anger G.H.O.S.T his something that only humans know or are affected by.
We finally saw the final battle for the AllSpark. Bumblebee was the one chosen to carry it to the battlefield but was never shown after he passed it to Optimus….mmmmm
this was also the battle we were told he disappear after. And we weren't shown the reason why.
( For me, it's pretty clear he must have do something to the AllSpark before the bridge was destroy. It doesn't make sence for Optimus to destroy it oterwise. It's also a good explanation to why Bee is still hiding, since he have precious informations to keep safe.)
Something is strange about BBB first ALT mode. It may be more emotions related then plot related, but I still think it's interesting.
He seem really sad/nostalgic when the kids talks about it in episode 12
And he also didn't take well when Jawbreaker said he choose it wrong in episode 13. Could have being just him being mad about being insulted, but I can't imagine there is not something more to this.
Also, we learned Bee must have change vehicule mode several time since he start hiding
And it was confirm that he was still going on missions (undercover ones) on his exile. That could be an explanation to why the Autobots never seem to be suprise to see him. He just keep showing up once in a while to say hello!
Lastly, not something we learn, but I just want to point out that Bumblebee is really just that guy that know everybody by first name, even decepticons. I found it pretty cute.
I think that's all! let me know if I missed something!
A Comprehensive List of Spideyfist Interactions (pt.6)
hello and welcome back to: reasons Spideyfist is canon. a series where i take you through each episode of The Ultimate Spiderman and show you why i believe that Peter Parker and Danny Rand are dating in canon, or at least that they are each other’s favorites. and also give you commentary on the show itself as i do
this part features episodes 7 through 13 of season 2
~~~
S2E7 Spidah-Man!
- say what you will about this episode, i know i do, but the majority of what i saw when it first came out with kinda not great. i like it alright, but it wasn’t my favorite.
- Danny’s not in this episode until the end, so headcanon and commentary!
- cartoon characters carry sinks for the purposes of throwing
- people go insane when money is involved, never freaking fails
- dude, this entire show and the characters send like 90% of the time dumping on Peter, it’s cringey and awful.
- Danny and Peter are standing next to each other, Danny is uneccesarily close
- “oh, i’d tell you where to stick those cameras, but i was raised better than that!” i wasn’t, but i’d do the same. you fucking go, Peter
- Boston works FAST, holy shit
- Peter Parker, New York resident, not understanding a Boston accient
- DID PETER JUST FLIP OFF THE CAMERA?
- juice box, juice box
- Peter wanting to help Ollie by NOT getting him wrapped up in the hero life when he’s so young. Peter understanding that kids are kids and need to be allowed to be kids
- the team having the best time at the water park
- Peter, despite feeling under appreciated, still goes back to New York because he has responsibilities there and knows he can’t shirk them. plus he has a team to lead and he can’t just cut them loose, that would be rude
- ahh the villains of Boston. Adam Slammer, the Plymoth Rocket, and Salem’s Witch
- good grief
- i think at this point, i’m just either gonna do only headcanons for episodes Danny’s not in or just mentions he’s not in it. maybe a mix.
- in season 3, we get wind that Spiderman’s sacrifice for New York has inspired a whole new group of heroes, but Spiderman’s been inspiring heroes since season 1 and 2
- god bless JJJ leave it alone
- team has doubts Peter isn’t coming back, but did Danny? no, no he didn’t
~~~
S2E8 Carnage
- Peter, you know something always goes wrong when you say that
- ah the Goblin returns
- probably because you HAVE been herded to something vile and villainous
- ah yes... the ongoing issues Peter has with Harry and how Harry views Spiderman
- the innocents will always be Peter’s number one priority and that’s fucking NOBEL
- oh this episode, i remember it now. this episode has BIG evidence too
- in just about evey shot after being pulled from the rubbel, if the camera’s focus isn’t solely on Peter, Danny’s in the shot too
- Harry only expects the worst from Norman and it fucking sucks for Harry because Norman has shown him he can only expect the worst
- Harry and Peter? ride or die. if Peter needs help on an assignment, Harry’s there. if Harry needs help hiding a body, Peter’s there
- side note: Danny and Luke have those vibes too
- and again i say, Goblin is the worst parts of Norman, his darkest and most intrusive thoughts
- ahhh Carnage
- Peter fighting every second to get control back
- the team deliberates and talks out of Harry’s earshot, wondering where Peter would’ve gone and what Goblin wants with him and the entire time, Danny does NOT let go of Peter’s backpack
- Danny doesn’t look. Danny doesn’t even LOOK and even so, Peter doesn’t look like Peter. so how does Danny know Peter’s back? well, Danny can read an aura and we’ve long established that Peter is “a beacon for someone with [Danny’s] power”
- shit, things are flying, people are getting hurt. what to do, what to do? well let’s start with protecting Peter’s best friend. Danny steps forward in front of Harry which i count
- the whole fight, the only one to land more than one hit was Danny, why? Danny is Peter’s favorite
- god this episode
- there are stark differences between Carnage and Venom and i think it well shows, especially in this episode
- Venom is honestly, scary
- Venom and Spiderman are a love-hate relationship
- “i can’t let you do this!” should’ve been the ultimate clue for Harry figuring shit out but NOPE
- Danny answers Peter’s call for help
- “we’re almost there” “Iron Fist, good”
- oooh shit
- the symbiote interacting with Harry is honestly the only basis Peter has for Venom and it really sets things up for the later season
- “indeed. i do. kick alot. with my feet!” this fucking kid
- “Harry!” “I’ve got him!” the IMMEDIATE reassurance, the moment of panic, then the calm. the way Danny knows. this isn’t Iron Fist talking to Peter Parker it’s Danny talking to Peter, telling him that Danny’s got this
- Danny’s doing his best and it’s so cute
- “how do i thwip?” aww Danny
- Danny asks for help, Peter’s on his level willing to do so
- this man spitting facts. cause i don’t know if it’s obvious, but Danny’s bigger in the shoulders than Peter is and Peter’s already said he doesn’t wash the costume but once or twice a month
- this episode i have love-hate relationship with, but it does give me excellent evidence
~~~
S2E9 House Arrest
- i have a love-hate relationshp with this episode too
- okay, so you might ask how this part counts too, but the only complaint Danny gets is his insence, which bother’s Peter’s sense of smell. easily fixed but Peter doesn’t ask Danny to stop. he’s got no issues compaining about the team and ther habits on any given day, but Danny never gets a complaint except for to us the viewers who don’t live in his world
- Danny also gets spoken about last, which i’m counting
- Danny throws a punch and Peter goes after him, which i count
- this fucking team is acting suspicious and it’s so cute once you know the reason
- Danny gives Peter a thank you because Danny is POLITE
- why are the team still in costume? there’s dozens of people coming over and you’re not out of costume yet?
- Peter’s not scolding Danny, he’s literally not even looking at him, he’s yelling at Ava, Sam, and Luke and Danny WALKS OVER
- casual gnome theft
- who’s the blonde in the picture? Peter’s mom?
- robotic voices means everything is going tits up
- Peter casually scooping the weights up like they’re nothing
- Peter really only thinks the worst of Sam sometimes, which is ANOTHER thing that turns me off that ship
- BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL DEALING EITH THEIR OWN CHALLANGES PETER
- the team trying to keep Peter from finding shit out while also fighting off the house security
- this team has three stupidly strong people on it; Peter, Danny, and Luke, which gives me the “they’ve totally arm wrestled” but then you have to think about the fact that Danny’s only strong like Peter and Luke when he’s charged up the iron fist
- “Death Trap Makeover”
- when you look at Danny, he’s already got his chi charged up and ready to go as he’s being smashed between the two walls. there’s nothing stopping him, he just won’t punch his way out. why? “i’m trying not to ruin your room” this COUNTS
- “when that man is generous enough to let me sleep on his floor” Danny slept in Peter’s room fucking conFIRMED
- do i even have to say it? Danny follows Peter’s orders without question, he’s the only one who does so FROM THE BEGINNING
- Danny get knocked into the wall, Peter’s engaging the enemy in seconds
- Danny climbs up, Peter’s right behind him
- Danny and Peter standing next to each other after a battle again
- headcanon: SHIELD does bi-weekly scannings of every single thing in the house to make sure the house would be perfect in the event it was destroyed
- “we where going to tell you. the party? it was for you.” cue me crying
- Danny’s the first one to speak up, almost the second Coulson’s finished speaking
- “maybe we can do some group yoga!” Danny, sweetie, Peter would probably do anything you asked of him
~~~
S2E10 The Man-Wolf
- fun fact, this episode’s title is forshadowing for later episodes
- this episode also has big evidence in it, season 2 is just full of big evidence for this ship and it’s great
- Peter takes a hit, Danny’s the first one who responds
- i headcanon that the LMDs also have illusions for each of the team members. they break them out for solo training sessions and special occasions
- Danny and Peter standing beside each other after battle, once again
- Peter’s love of the moon
- them all being moon geeks
- “drive faster, Danny!” “faster?” proceeds to drive faster
- Danny sounds so amused and fond when he says “faster?”, it’s so cute. it counts
- Danny literally spends the rest of the episode immensely worried the second we find the scratchmarks. it’s not just worried either, he actually looks scared
- the team splits up and Peter goes with Danny and Sam, why? likely because if you remove Sam’s helmet he’s no longer got access to his powers, and Danny’s just a normal human with no special abilities aside from the Iron Fist. Luke and Ava both have access to their powers at all times and Luke’s got impervious skin
- LOOK AT THEM, they’re terrified
- Peter and John have a lot in common and i think their relationship could be good
- Danny says a wise saying that John and Sam don’t get, but Peter just says, “here’s to NOT judging a book by its cover” which implies he understood exactly what Danny was saying. counts towards time spent togther
- “Earth to Spiderman” Danny’s literally acting like a completely different person here, I wonder- sees episode number oh that makes sense
- Peter apologizes to Danny for spacing out, which he does NOT do with other people
- well, you see, Spiderman, THESE jewels are inactive, the one in my chest is NOT
- sword!
- Danny gets thrown into the wall and the first thing he tells Peter is “stay on him, i’ll catch up!” ughhhh mans knows Peter so fucking well
- also, Peter checked on Danny before he did anything. if Danny’s talking, relatively unharmed, and saying “i’ll catch up” Peter’s fine to keep moving
- when he and Danny crash into each other, neither of them move to get up. with others, Peter’s on his feet in seconds, but with Danny, he’s content to lay there a minute
- Danny gets pinned to the floor and then picked up and once Peter sees this he’s moving and getting Danny out
- Danny’s injured in this episode to the point that he’s not getting up and it’s kinda scary cause Danny’s pretty fucking durable
- Danny’s not getting up and the walls are coming down around them, so Peter shoots his webs at Danny and pulls him closer. “Danny! i got you." i cannot explain how cute and loving this scene is to me
- Peter’s not “helping Danny walk” carrying him out, Peter’s legitamately carrying Danny bridal style!
- Danny’s first up the ladder, which might be because he can pilot the engine but may also be because he was injured to the point that he WASN’T GETTING UP
- Peter’s upset with himself because he’s leaving John behind and Danny rushes to comfort him about it
- Peter’s so supportive of his team. he’s always boosting them up and helping them out and it’s so sweet
- “on the moon, even I can pitch a Fist-Ball!” because you can’t on Earth? sir, you’re STRONGER than Luke is, wdym?
- Ava trusts that Peter’s got a plan, but Danny trusts Peter implicitely
- AND AGAIN I WILL SAY PETER ONLY HAS TO GIVE DANNY BARE BONES INSTRUCTIONS FOR DANNY TO UNDERSTAND HIS POINT
- Danny’s rushing to comfort Peter about John
- Fury may be a fucking idiot, but he’s a protective and realistic idiot and i love that for the team
~~~
S2E11 Swarm
- Danny’s not in this episode, no notable interactions. this episode is really funny though
~~~
S2E12 Itsy Bitsy Spider-Man
- in the wide shots for the opening, Peter and Danny are swimming next to each other
- the team is lucky Fury likes them otherwise, they'd be grounded
- this episode confuses me cause it's not like the team doesn't still have the control they have, they're just smaller now so it's harder to stand up to the things they normally would, like windmills or whatever it was Luke was doing
- you know the whole thing about the Maximoff twins being co-dependent in the MCU. I'm about a minute away from putting Peter and Danny on that level if they don't stop walking/standing right next to each other
- of course SHIELD has a daycare
- Loki as a child is not something I want to see again, mostly because of the route the writers took it
- also the team being oblivious
- Danny and Peter are both on the top of the piles when the team is trying the Trojan Horse escape
- you know, I really think this list wouldn't exist if the writers didn't make it so damn easy. when you start really paying attention it's so simple to see
- when Loki poofs away and then rematerializes, Peter and Danny land next to each other
- again, it's too fricking easy, Danny and Peter ate standing next to each other again
- okay so the entire fight from the team finding out the extra kid is Loki to them destroying the Destroyer armor takes 10 minutes? wack but okay
- Peter, grabbed by the head and swung around. Danny, goes in immediately
- Danny: has a problem, Peter: immediately has the solution
- I s2g if Peter and Danny don't stop standing next to each other before, during, or after battles-
- see! see! Luke is still strong enough to lift a big ass panda (which isn't light) with one hand when it has another person in it! they should be able to win the battle normally even if they're smaller!
- Loki went after Danny and Peter said "not on my watch" by webbing his legs together so he can't run anymore
- Loki goes after Peter and Danny says "not today!" by tearing out the anchors of the ferris wheel so it can be knocked into Loki
- Danny would've shot the norn stone to Peter, but Peter had a heartfelt speech to make
- the standard after battle standing right next to each other, complete with being unnecessarily close together
~~~
S2E13 Journey of the Iron Fist
- the opening sequence is adorable and I love how cartoonish it is
- Danny seems agitated from the get-go, which is the first clue that something's wrong, AND something Peter picks up on
- I mentioned in an early list that the weekly sparring session is (to my knowledge) something Dammy does specifically with Peter, and I hold to that
- "the spirit of a K'un L'un warrior beats in you" I'm sorry, I gotta just- minor fangirling squeals
- Danny being insistant that Peter learning to fight without his webshooters, telling him that they’re only a tool, and reminding Peter that he’s more that his webshooters is so fucking cute, man
- Danny is powerful enough to block Peter’s hits without even paying attention
- of course they’re fighting on the Brooklyn bridge
- Peter being impressed by Danny’s abilities and skills
- Peter being excited and Danny IMMEDIATELY being like “hey, no, focus. this isn’t a game” because he KNOWS this guy, as we’ll later find out
- Peter gets hurt and Danny goes to catch him, which COUNTS
- there are no words exchanged, no words that are said between either of them, and they still grab onto each other. the mutual understanding, the instant communication- i just fucking-
- Danny sounds worried- actually worried when he tells Peter to grab his webshooters
- “what about all that using ones ability talk”, “repitition begets skill, neither of which lie in you against THIS assassin”- because Danny knows that kind of people Peter faces, he’s been at Peter’s side for a year now, fighting the good fight and training right next to him. Danny knows Peter can handle himself in a fight, but not against this man- further evidence Danny KNOWS who this guy is. Danny wants Peter at his best in this fight (because he knows Peter will not leave) and for that, Peter needs his webshooters
- “there is no honor in you!”
- Iron Fist gets hurt, he falls, he hits the ground in front of some truck. he could defend himself against the truck with the Iron Fist, and get out of it, but his chi stays calm and Danny braces himself for a hit. Spider Man, the second Danny falls, is right there, webbing up the truck as fast as he can and standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF IRON FIST
- and again, Danny gets hurts, falls, and Peter says, “nope, not today!” literally sends him flying behind a fast moving cargo truck. and I’m supposed to NOT ship them? come on, man, they practically write themselves!
- AND THEN ONCE THE THREAT IS GONE HE GOES AND HELPS IRON FIST UP!! HOW AM I NOT SUPPOSED TO SHIP THIS??
- the way they both immediately flip around when Danny’s birth name is used- knowing a heroes real name is dangeous, using it when said hero is in costume is a big no-no and no one respects that more than Peter
- “is that Papa Fist?” “no, he’s-” the way Danny was just gonna explain everything to Peter. the way Danny just automatically started doing so, yes this counts, Danny doesn’t do that for other people, he’s very tight lipped about his home country
- and then Danny just gives Peter his belongings. there’s no will or other instructions, just gives everything to Peter. there’s no stipulation that Danny thought important enough to say, he’s literally leaving EVERYTHING to Peter
- and Peter doesn’t even CARE. he just wants to know what’s going on
- and, even better, Danny looks so sad, and the sad music playing in the background? no, man, i’m fucking done
- “yeah, we’re not just gonna let this happen, right?” no, no we’re not
- “why would Danny Dollat-signs sleep on my floor?” the whole rich thing and Danny giving him all his earthly possessions doesn’t even hit until later, he’s more concerned with why Danny would sleep on a floor if he doesn’t have to
- and then he immediately disregards the whole rich thing because Danny’s more important to him, he even says “it wouldn’t be enough. obviously.”
- “as flies the Iron Fist, so goes the Spiderman.” .... do I even need to say anything? do i? yeah, no, this fucking counts right here
- "beautiful” is the first thing Peter thinks about Danny’s home country. we’ll get into why that counts in another episode
- Peter makes it a point to say he’s with Danny, that he’s just visiting, because he understands that he knows NOTHING about this country and it’s customs, he’s very calm and relaxed and doesn’t even fight when he’s attacked first
- Danny needs to know nothing other than Peter is here and he’s being attacked before he’s jumping in to help, to defend his best friend coughcoughlovercoughcough against the guy he’s known since he was a child, callng Peter his guest without hesitation
- Peter asks a question and Danny answers it immediately
- “if you throw your lot in with this fool, you’ll suffer the same fate!” “gladly.” omfggggg, no hesitation, NO hesitation
- the way Danny turns back to look at Peter, to check on him
- Danny’s quick to reassure Peter that in his culture, Peter isn’t being insulted, and then is like welp, you’ve never been here, let’s get you inside and warm
- Danny just patiently answers any and every question Peter has. no one else does that! and you can blame it on the fact that no one’s as zen as Danny or Peter’s askign a lot of questions, but none of them are like that with anyone else either!
- Danny likes orange soda, that’s adorable
- “talk.” and Danny DOES
- Danny specifies Peter when he says he chose to learn
- the immediate concern for his friend, even as Danny keeps trying to explain
- also, K’un L’un is a private place, doesn’t trust outsiders, so it’s doubtful Peter would’ve gotten into a private medical area without Danny being like “i want him with me”
- he fucking- breathes deep Peter, who’s been on the ceiling and out of the way the entire scene, immediately jumps down to the floor to help Danny stand up because he needs to be on his feet for this
- Danny doesn’t even try to see about the other warriors. he knows who he wants, he knows how he can win with honor, he knows how to handle this competition. Peter’s the one he wants. Peter’s who he names. no hesitation.
- Peter keeps a hand on Danny through the entire interaction, if you notice. It’s not a “hiding” or a “holding back” or anything, he’s literally helping Danny. that hold he’s got on Danny is one to keep Danny steady, one hand on his arm, the other on Danny’s back
- “don’t take it personally” mhm mhm, yep. counts
- i’m not gonna cover the trials much, tbh. there’s not a lot i can say about them in reference to Spideyfist, but i’ll do my best
- STARTING?
- Peter fights to the last because “Danny... needs... me”
- Peter APOLOGIZES to Danny like it’s his fucking fault this guy didn’t play by the rules. this counts
- Peter still saves Scorpion even after everything
- awwww the old monks
- Danny and Peter actually have very similar fighting styles when you think about it, and nothing showcases that more than this episode. they’re both on the defense with Scorpion until they have the oppurtunity, that’s how they both are in a fight, holding back until it’s necessary to fight
- Peter realizes Danny got his eyesight back and asks about it, you can hear a little concern
- Danny choosing that moment to compliment Peter, a perfect counter point to the abuse Peter’s been suffering all say, AND the only compliment Peter cares about enough to answer
“let’s no push it” with an amused smile
- the HUG Danny gives him, the way he doesn’t let go until the monks call for him
- and they let him go back!
- Spiderman being excited about the one year as well!
I can’t believe how good this particular series is at just about everything.
It really was excellent from top to bottom but before I get into this article, this will contain spoilers about the ending as well as reader discretion being advised about some heavy subject matter.
Unlike the first series, this is just one arc that’s dubbed The Wizard of the Far East and it is only nine episodes long. That doesn’t sound terribly good on paper but it’s probably one of the best told stories that I’ve ever seen. As a viewer, you are wrapped around The Great Pretender’s proverbial finger in such a profound and clever way that you are constantly guessing all the way through to the very end. Tension is created so well that you fully buy in to the idea that any character at any point might reveal something that they’ve been hiding. Most of the first series was spent creating a fundamental trust in the fish-out-of-water protagonist as a viewer yet The Great Pretender still manages to pull the rug from under you.
You get a huge amount of backstory about Makoto Edamura and his father as well as Laurent’s life before he became a con artist but it doesn’t come off as shoved-in lore. It’s told very well and woven expertly into the narrative and this is coming from somebody who absolutely detests backstory in animé to force through character development. The Great Pretender tells the story of Laurent and Edamura’s father and how they were involved in the child-trafficking business as well as further honing in on Makoto’s abandonment issues and his identity crisis. Positions in society up and down the class system are analyzed and problems with discrimination in Asia are faced fairly head-on and quite honestly.
But truly, I could list off everything in this show and why it was brilliant but the overarching reason for my loving this series so much was that the show didn’t really behave like an animé. Well, not like any animé that I’ve ever seen - especially compared to the first series. It was incredibly mature in it’s approach to it’s themes and had barely any jokes in it at all. Truthfully, it’s a gritty heist drama that would rival Ocean’s Eleven or Uncut Gems and you can’t say that about a lot of animé.
I love the feeling like a kid again when I’m watching a film or a TV show that wraps it’s claws around my chest and tightens the grip with believable tension and real danger that you can buy into. It is as though The Great Pretender has blossomed from a precocious teenager into a hardened cynical adult akin to Okabe in Steins;Gate 0. I don’t want to talk too much about the plot or anything like that because I urge you to watch it for yourself if you haven’t already and trust me when I say that it absolutely is unmissable. What I’m going to do now is talk a bit about the ending and how I feel about it so if you haven’t seen it or don’t really care about someone else’s thoughts, do a hard scroll now.
For the most part, I did like the ending for the reasons I already said. Right until the very last minute, you feel like it could go either way and there are so many twists and turns and secrets to be revealed. You can’t take your eyes off the screen and the same goes for the big reveal on the long con because, like a magic trick, you want to know what’s going on behind the curtain. It’s all very good in terms of structure in how the sting is unravelled before your eyes.
For a long time, it looks like Makoto Edamura is sabotaging their con to get one over Laurent and all his previous meddling. The fake police come in and it’s obviously all of Laurent’s NPC pals but Makoto whistles for the cavalry and Cassano turns up from the first series. Makoto then outs all of his pals as con artists, he acts like he’s fallen for the chairman as a parental figure and he turns on his father before getting a big slash in his stomach for his trouble.
But of course, it turns out to be one big act and it’s presented as Edamura’s idea. My question is: why? I don’t understand what the point was of any of this because it seems to serve no real greater purpose other than trying to fool the audience. They live by the principle that if any of them fuck up, the group won’t stick up for each other. It is on the individual responsibility to carry their own weight. It’s bothers me because it’s used as a sort of fake plot device to carry the mystery and tension of the scene even though it’s a performance for nobody. All these Yakuza aren’t going to have a clue about what they’re talking about. As Edamura announces that he’s finally going beat Laurent at his own game when he hasn’t really.
(A/E: I just realized as I’m writing this that the point of the con artist code talk was in reference to earlier when they pulled the fake execution on Abigail and Cynthia so I guess the reference to it does make sense on some level. I still think that it’s a bit of a cheat on the audience because the presentation of the story is unreliable for the sake of it.)
It just strikes me as a massive cheat for fake tension to the audience. Especially considering that, believably, Makoto isn’t exactly warming up to his Father who seems to be fucking him over at every turn but was actually on his side the whole time. The other thing that bothers me is that, for some reason, they decided to involve the prior scam victims from the first series (Cassano, Ibrahim and Coleman). It’s presented as though they are in cahoots with Edamura to execute the big betrayal. But they are in it the whole time which means that they are perfectly fine with Laurent and Edamura fucking them out of nearly every last coin to their name. Ibrahim even tried to kill them all in cold blood.
I just thought it was a little much and extravagant for the sake of the excitement in the face of logic. Bizarrely, I’m saying this and I’m completely comfortable with them building a fake headquarters on a remote island and rigging it with explosives and a mechanical elevator, stranding the gangsters forever. But that isn’t anything that odd for the genre.
Dorothy, the woman whom Laurent was doing all of this for and was killed by the organized crime syndicate, is actually alive in Taiwan and appears to have lost of all her memories. So if the show does get renewed, I assume Dorothy is going to be a sort of Casca figure (If Abigail wasn’t already by virtue of looking exactly like her). But if the series wasn’t renewed, I wouldn’t really mind. It would be difficult to top what this was and how this particular series was finalized which is a bit of a shame but we’ll have to see. It being a Netflix show that is “animé-only”, I find it hard to see how it wouldn’t be renewed and if it is, I’ll be right there.
None of my complaints really change the fact that this was one of the best shows that I’ve ever seen. It lived up to the hype and beyond. A truly stellar animé that does just about everything right and what I do admire is how it actually improved on the first series (in my eyes) because it shows that the engine room behind the animé is willing to make changes and take risks.
Stop reading now and go and watch it again. Recommend it to your friends. It is on Netflix so... y’know...
I’m not advocating anything but do what you have to.
now i may not have been in the rvb fandom for very long but i’ve picked up on a few things and i got something i gotta say
i don’t know how people can hate on the shisno paradox arc
yes i understand it may deviate from what the previous few seasons were all about, they were more serious while this concept is just. kinda silly. but in the end you have to remember, rvb is a comedy. it’s not going to be serious all the time and that statement isn’t just confined to the jokes. it’s gonna have funny scenarios that are wacky and seemingly out-of-place. bc that’s how comedy works.
also it really gives us some very good insight into the characters. why they are the way that they are, what drives them toward their goals, how they view themselves and those around them. s17 episodes 11 and 12 are just. *chef’s kiss*. they make me stim so hard because you really get to see what they’re all afraid of, and how they go about comforting one another really tells a lot. the interaction between grif and kai specifically hits the specific part of my brain that makes me lose my shit /pos. ALSO ARE WE LITERALLY JUST GOING TO IGNORE DONUT GETTING MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT??? LIKE????????
and from a storyline standpoint, at least another season after 15 was necessary. 15 ended on a cliffhanger, we were never given a resolution knowing that everyone was going to be okay because we never saw that wash would be. the ending of singularity/s17 is one of the reasons why i refuse to watch rvb zero: it wraps the entire story up so nicely. everyone’s alive and well, the world isn’t in any imminent danger, and the villains are taken care of. the reds and blues can finally rest.
so yeah, s16/17 are good if you ask me. i do understand why people might not like them, and they’re entitled to their own opinions. but like... you can’t ignore the fact that we were really given some very good things in those seasons.
Now that we’re well into summer, we’re at that point where we can look back at the recent television season with a bit of distance. One show that’s received a fair bit of attention both around here and in fandom spaces, is Supergirl. We were never quiet about how hopeful we found it initially, or how emotionally poignant some of its episodes proved to be.
Yet as it kept going, we didn’t quite know what to do with it. Some weeks were serviceable, others cringeworthy, and it was impossible not to notice a certain introduced character getting the lion’s share of attention.
Well, after dissecting Mon-El’s narrative inclusion during Season 2, Gretchen and Kylie are back again, this time to dissect everything. EVERYTHING. What was this season? Why was there a measurable drop in quality? What did work well?
A Comrehensive List of SpideyFist Interactions (pt.5)
hello and welcome back to: reasons Spideyfist is canon. a series where i take you through each episode of The Ultimate Spiderman and show you why i believe that Peter Parker and Danny Rand are dating in canon, or at least that they are each other’s favorites. and also give you commentary on the show itself as i do
this part features episodes 1 through 6 of season 2
~~~
S2E1 The Lizard:
- this is another episode i was waiting for, because it has some BIG evidence
- race against the clock troupe
- you know, NO ONE tells Peter shit in this show
- Danny (and Luke) gets thrown into a wall and Peter jumps down to check on them figure out what happened
- Danny’s at the front of the line when Peter herds the team past, implying Danny was rounded up last, which counts as favoritism when you consider that Peter's literally SHOVING the team out the door
- of course the team still lives with May and Peter
- from what i know about meditation, you find a quiet place to meditate in. from what i understand, that place is usually somewhere you also sleep in. which means that Danny sleeps in Peter’s room. if this is not the case, firstly i apologize for my misinformation, secondly, Peter’s still letting Danny use his bedroom, his BEDROOM, for something that consumes time and requires peace and quiet. also, the smoke also bothers Peter, as seen when he sneezes just walking into the room, but he lets Danny burn his insence and candles in Peter’s bedroom
- Peter’s annoyed with everyone and being unable to find a place to be alone, but he’s not annoyed with Danny and he actively APOLOGIZES for disturbing Danny (and scaring him)
- Sam and May’s relationship is really cute
- ah, the zoom in on the Lizard dna, forshadowing~
- Peter knowing that it’s his job to save people without worrying about the objects- Connors wants to help Otto for science to help others and that’s so admirable
- Connors isn’t my favorite character, that’s Danny, but he’s a close second. he saw an oppurtunity to help and did so without hesitation
- LIZARD ARM
- i will forever be upset that this is how they chose to handle the Lizard in this iteration. all Connors wanted was a) to help Spiderman and b) to find a way to help those with disabled bodies. which i think is very nobel, some people don’t like that they’re down a limb and that’s valid. Connors suddenly lost a limb and wants it back, i get that. anyway, i’m rambling back to other commentary
- i like to headcanon that Connors and Octavus dated in collage
- Connors straight up looses his humanity and Octavius fucks him up more by refusing to help. Doc Ock’s obessession with seing the world turned into moster like he sees himself as now ends up being the foundation for some of the biggest villains Spiderman faces this series
- Sam’s disgust with the sewers
- Spidey-sense is either inaccurate or has terrible timming
- Stan Lee! i love this damn show and the fact that Stan worked on this show!
- we so often forget that Peter Parker isn’t just a brillian hero, he’s also a fantastic scientist that specializes in chemistry
- Danny’s the first one to reveal himself when Peter says “this was my plan”
- honorable PowerNova mentions: the way Sam just slams into Connors when the Lizard goes to attack Luke
- “you have about two seconds, Spider!” no one else uses that nickname for Peter in case you’re wondering. it’s just Danny. and Danny doesn’t give anyone else specialized nicknames
- the fact that Peter struggles with having so many people in his house is something that i can relate to, but very differently
- Danny’s a vegitarian!!
~~~
S2E2 Electro:
- i think Electro is actually sporting his classic comic look in this episode and i think that’s amazing!
- Peter’s adorable and the team being absorbed in their own tasks is something else. it also shows what this team does for fun.
- during the Electro introduction, when Electro is in the television the camera angle zooms out and shows Danny and Peter, you can tell by the hair color and shape as well as the outfits. PREVIOUSLY, Danny was sitting on the couch in a meditative pose. so when shit gets weird, Danny IMMEDIATELY gets up off the couch and goes to stand next to Peter. the time between the lights going out and the camera angle was like 5 seconds, which means it HAD to be immediate
- Danny and Peter standing next to each other before a battle again!
- also, I didn't address this is the first episode and I should've, but Danny wears green through the entirety of season 1, but in season 2 he's wearing red. and of all the team, which one wears red in any capacity? PETER DOES
- "we need light!" hmm maybe we should ask the guy who lights up- nah! "Danny can you use your fist?"
- no hesitation! NO HESITATION! there is no hesitation to be found when Danny gives it thought. he's just like, "well, I've never done it before, let's test it out" AND DOES IT
- in the flip away where the team are cavemen, the score cards go like this: Luke - 9, Ava - 8, Danny - 9.5, and we know this show is 3rd person limited, from Peter’s point of view, so this fucking counts
- and when Sam's pushing the Spidey-Cycle who gets to sit on the back of it? who gets to sit with Peter on the Spidey-Cycle? say it with me, here, DANNY DOES. if it was weight distribution, Ava would be on the back, but Luke's carrying Ava and Danny’s on the back of the Spidey-Cycle
- PETER AND DANNY HAVE NO FLUCKING SPACE BETWEEN THEM EITHER! NO SPACE, THEY'RE SITTING BACK TO BACK AND DANNY’S LEANING UP AGAIN PETER
- Danny's also the only one who sits on the back of the Spidey-Cycle. like, ever, to my knowledge, unless in an emergency
- also, this may not be accurate, but I'm counting it anyway cause it's fucking cute, but in the wipe-away where the team is cavemen on the stone wheel, Peter looks like he's carrying Danny and that's fucking adorable
- okay, so now things are a little different, but again, Peter shows favoritism for Danny, he gets to sit on the handlebars of the bike, where it's less crowded and Ava's relegated to the back with her hands on Peter’s back. it's so cute
- god these poor kids
- Batroc is fucking WEIRD. wtf was up with the pacifier??
- Danny is fucking AMAZING and i LOVE HIM
- if Danny and Peter doesn’t stop standing next to each other all the time, i’m gonna start thinking they’re gay /hj, also this counts twice
- and again, Ava may have been the first to follow, but guess who’s RIGHT on her heels
- Ava and Luke get to fly up, but Danny gets fucking THROWN
- hi, hello, i’m not a film nerd, but i have a minor obsession with perceptions and how specific things can alter that. so, when the camera angle zooms in right before the tram hit the building, it shows Peter AND Danny
- Peter moves, Danny’s right behind him, perfectly in sync with the man whois his leader. yes, this counts
- and again, i will always say, Peter doesn’t have to say a thing to Danny for Danny to understand what he wants
- “hero helps the villain by running his mouth” cliche
- also when they’re webbed to the truck, the others all look like they’ve been shot at by web fluid and are now stuck to a truck, but when you look at Danny, he’s got his arms crossed looking like he expected this, which means he LET Peter shoot him beause we know from later episodes that Peter’s webs stick to you and set in seconds. does this count? i’m counting it
- Danny and Peter are standing next to each other in the elevator again
- listen, i’m not gonna say Sam’s a dumbass. he’s a hero-in-training and he’s from fucking space. what i AM gonna say is that i feel like he should think a little more before he speaks
- jesus fUCK Electro
- hi, welcome to me being cheesy and liking music: i totally have the headcanon that Peter makes Danny playlists
- poor villain
- the team bonding is cute
- “better than being ignored!” glances in Danny’s general direction “I... guess.”
~~~
S2E3 The Rhino:
- Danny’s not in this episode, no notable interactions. BUT there’s headcanons i can share
- THE RHINO
- headcanon one: the team started joining Peter on patrols after they saw just how much effort he puts into superhero-ing. Danny came up with the offical idea and Ava made the schedule
- headcanon two: Peter has a small squad willing to do anything for him (yes it’s made up of his team, Harry, and MJ, and YES Danny is a leader of this squad)
- does everyone on the team have bikes? can we see Danny, Ava, and Sam’s?
- “since when did you get more sage than Iron Fist?” Peter we get it, you’re in love and know all your boyfriends sayings.
- also, by definition, Peter calls Danny wise, which fucking COUNTS
- jumping off cliffs with your friends
~~~
S2E4 Kraven the Hunter:
- fucking Peter and Danny and their fucking proximity to each other when there’s no damn need for it
- Danny comes up right next to Peter udring the training exersize
- “group up and-” Spidey-sense goes off “shit she’s going after my boyfriend” - like did you hear that panic? that just SCREAMS worried s/o
- say what you will, but Ava is very methodical. take out the biggest threat first, the one who flies and can see stealth attacks coming by staying above the fight. then the powerhouse, the master of technique (and also the leader’s weakness). then the muscle, and finally, the leader
- okay, so idk if you guys noticed, but Danny? during the panning shot where Ava’s driving Peter backwards with her claws? Danny’s entire attention is on that fight. he’s watching it like he’s ready to jump in an second, he follows the fight with his entire body.
- video games, Danny and Peter are sitting next to each other
- "carbo load”, Danny and Peter are sitting next to each other
- at the movies, Danny and Peter are sitting next to each other
- this is will say, when Peter gets thrown to the edge of the roof, Sam gets real serious and steps between someone he’s afraid of and someone he teases all the time
- Danny’s the only person who could land an actual hit on Ava from up close, which only proves his skill
- Danny gets donkey kicked and Peter’s immediately saying “we gotta stop this now”
- the cut aways are cute, okay?
- if i had a dollar every time Peter and Danny where standing next to each other-
- who’s the first one to follow the order? who’s the FIRST ONE to follow Peter’s lead? Danny, it’s Danny
- hey, this follows the same training Ava did! biggest threat, powerhouse, muscle
- why is handsome what he goes for?
- okay, so Peter doesn’t land immediately by Danny, which gets a dismissal at first, but then during my rewatch, i noticed he focussed in on Danny first and for a solid second longer than Luke or Sam, so i count it
- and again, he’s looking right at Danny (based on positioning and where his eye line would be) when he says “you take your cat nap and i’ll do my hero thang”
- okay. so if i understand this right, the tiger Ava has to keep in control is directly connected to the amulet, right? so then does that mean if she doesn’t have the amulet on her person she doesn’t have to be strictly in control all the time? therefore, following this line of logic, she could just put the amulet down somewhere and get a break, right?
- this episode fall back on what i said back in part 2 about Ava’s worst fears being failure. “i’m nothing without the amulet” is an explanation of that fear. she’s terrified of failing because she thinks she’s defined by her power. all of the team does. it’s an issue that really should be solved.
- “i know you’re not nothing” aww Peter’s comforting her
- each of the team is strong in their own ways, and the solo episodes only prove it
- “oh yeah? where are the boys?” they’re still unconsicous at the pier, let’s go get them
~~~
S2E5 Hawkeye:
- not going to lie to you, i do love Hawkeye more than i probably should considering he’s a HoH hero, but he’s my favorite of the Avengers and i will not back down on that
- Danny’s not in this epsiode, it’s commentary and headcanon
- wait, Danny talks first in the cut away. i’m counting it.
- okay so. i’m not going to tell you that i don’t ship Peter and Ava, but i am going to tell you i think she has a lot of growing to do before she should date anyone. Peter does to, of course, he’s an idiot kid just the same. i just think Peter’s less immature. it’s honestly the same for Sam, he gets blackmail and uses it against Peter, teasing and mocks in cruelty, and i understand that they care for each other, they’re teammates and family, but Peter shouldn’t be dating Sam or Ava as they are now
- Peter has a little baby crush on Hawkeye
- Danny’s talking first in all these cut aways, counts as favortism
- also, Peter doesn’t seem annoyed with the team until Luke pushes in and talks, in fact he almost looks like he’s looking around the sink to try and help Danny find his toothpaste
- Hawkeye and Peter have very different fighting styles and priorities and it shows when they’re stuck together
~~~
S2E6 The Sinister Six:
- training session on the statue of liberty
- Danny tells Peter to prepare instead of a random trash-talk line
- Peter walks close to Danny and speaks directly him when he say “you can do better”
- Danny walks away last, which i’m counting.
- Peter, just because you’re giving the team the option and letting them do their own thing doesn’t mean you’re a bad leader
- “they’ll be here, any minute” Peter knocking back bravado and faking confidence since 2012 /j
- Luke was first up, but Danny was right after, on his heels even, when Peter tried to call for his team
- Octavius is literally TORTURING an old friend to get his way, what else is he willing to do?
- the Sinister Six are stupid as hell
- okay, so i know you’re thinking, how can Peter’s tv appearance lend itself to Spideyfist? well, in truth, at first glance, it doesn’t. but you have to remember that he’s on The Daily Bugle broadcast, which is FAMOUS for putting Spiderman and anyone accociated with Spiderman down and ruining their reputation even if they’ve done nothing wrong. saying Nova’s name first, then White Tiger, then Power Man, then Iron Fist is actually a way to protect his boyfriend. Peter doesn’t necessarily like Sam and we’ve well established that Danny his favorite, to put Iron Fist’s name last is to quietly tell the public he doesn’t really care about that hero in order to protect him from media backlash
- you know, for all the shit Peter goes though and despite those like Fury and Ava telling him he’s not a good hero, Peter’s actually a really good hero
- the fucking villains just holding Peter down
- “and I did try” ...sighs
- “but inspirational enough” Danny not letting Peter talk badly about himself is so cute
- you know the only combo move we see in the show is the Fist Ball, where Luke throws Danny into the enemy and Nova dropping people on their enemies?
- i forget if it was atrophy or just the accident that cause Octavius to loose the use of his arms and legs in this universe, but one very well could lead into the other. anyway, the point is Peter ripping Octavius arms off was cold blooded
- he’s looking at Danny when he says “i’m going after Connors”
- Peter can’t ever given himself a fucking break, can he?
- “i won’t stop trying to save you!” is like a personal motto for Peter. in truth, he’s never going to stop trying to save the people he cares about and he’ll run himself into the ground doing so. we saw it with Harry and we see it here with Doctor Connors
