lowkey kinda weird to me that no one online’s talking abt how Hannibal Barca and Scipio Africanus faked their deaths in 183 BCE and lived the rest of their lives happily in each other’s company, their final resting place unknown but somewhere other than Rome and Carthage….i mean like….it definitely totally happened???

Hannibal Barca but it's also him as a child.

I love trying to figure out how the childhood of my fav historical characters could have been like. I imagine Hannibal as a well behaved kid with good and early problem solving skills.

I'll tag these types of post as "baby historical characters" bc I would like to post more of how I imagine them as kids

asking as a total layman: how do I get into the second punic war? do you have like a reading list?

Oooooh excellent question. I'm afraid I'm far from an expert on the subject, but it depends on how deep you want to get into it. I would suggest finding some YouTube videos that cover the overall history — that's how I got into it — even if they tend to be inaccurate in places. Oversimplified's series on the Second Punic War was my first introduction, and it's pretty entertaining. This video is also good, according to @seraphimfrog.

As for books, the most obvious are the two most reliable ancient sources, Livy's Ab Urbe Condita books 21-30, and Polybius' Histories. Beware that both of them, especially Livy, come from a Roman perspective and have no shortage of biases. We have no Carthaginian accounts of the Second Punic War (or of anything, really, since they were pretty much entirely wiped out :/).

For further reading, look into biographies on Hannibal or Scipio. I have not read up on many of them (I know, I know, tumblr user insoothilikethepunicwars is a FRAUD), but I've heard good things about Hannibal and Scipio: Pocket Giants by Greg Fisher, and Hannibal: A Hellenistic Life by Eve MacDonald.

As a big Carthage fan, I'd also recommend Carthage Must Be Destroyed by Richard Miles, which covers the entire history of Ancient Carthage.
