It’s more than fair to say I have what borderlines an obsession those lads from Sheffield, those lads being While She Sleeps. The only thing is that you can never be completely sure what you’re going to get, they keep you well on your toes and experimenting and changing things up. sometimes it has taken me going through their records a few times to truly appreciate it, but then I always fall in love. So album number 6, let’s get it.
I did have to go over it a few times to get it I was unsure the first few times but there were 2 instant winners from the very start. The first being “Leave Me Alone” which is a threatening creature, gritty and scratchy with an aggressive in your face verse and a ridiculously creepy chorus, firing warning shots before the fatal blow erupts. The second being “Down” featuring Malevolence vocal smasher Alex Taylor, and yeah of course it’s heavy but there’s more than that, it’s quite slick and full of swagger, when Taylor hits the mic the tone completely drops as he spits venomous growls, God tier song. The next song that broke through for me was the title track “Self Hell”, but I didn’t like it when it dropped as the lead single, in essence it feels like a parody 90s pop song grated with darkness and carnage, it’s the drop at the end that really won me over, so damn sleazy. Fin Power from Scouse duo STONE lends support on “Dopesick”, which was a curveball as I’m feeling like an indie base, nice thick crispy bass and they hold the notes, letting you sway in the crunchy wind. “Rainbows” got that roboty autotune which is a nice ambient addition, the group vocals are on point, I feel stupid for being unsure about it as I now adore it, relate very strongly to “We’re chasing rainbows, into black holes, I think too much”. They end the album with “Radical Hatred/Radical Love” which is a slow gentle building song, they have a long history of including a song in this vein but this one has particular deep meaning in its themes around the current state of society, the pen is indeed mightier than the sword .
Whilst it’s took me a few spins to “get it” I do now, and once again I’m obsessed. They’re really pushing their boundaries every time and coming up with gold. To me they’re still the best uk band on the scene and they deserve all the success they’ve got. We’ve come a long way from a free CD in metal hammer to now, it’s been a phenomenal ride so far and I pray it goes on forever.
