MAJOR PYRE SPOILERS
But like,
I think the entire point of the ending is to force you to make sacrifices and use your better judgment 😭 this may not be very surprising to some players but you'd be surprised how many people will tell you they hated the ending solely because you can't send EVERYONE back (and I'll be honest even I used to be one of the people very salty about this) but
Pyre has always been a game about player choices and consequences. Winning and losing rites have an impact on the story. The things you say have an impact on characters. The people you send back and the order you send them back in changes dialogues and conversations throughout the game. It has ALWAYS been a game where player choices matter. It has ALWAYS been a game where there are consequences. I've always meant to do a playthrough where I purposely lose every rite because my first time through I was so scared of getting a, "bad ending," that I rather restart a rite over 4 times than fail even one of them.
But the whole point of Pyre is to throw you into a realistic journey where there are consequences and fears and things you don't want to happen and reactions as immediate results of your actions and successes. It is just like the real world. It is a game that makes you value the hardships, decisions, and stressors of a journey where so much rests on your shoulders and it would be unrealistic to have a perfect ending with a perfect result of everyone getting sent home. Part of the whole point is to make evaluations and decisions throughout this game including, "who does and doesn't deserve to go back."
This doesn't necessarily have to be "I like Pamitha more, so I'll make sure she goes back." Or "Jodi didn't do anything wrong, she deserves a second chance." But it can be, "Who here actually benefits from going back? Who here has nothing to lose by staying in the downside?"
You are forced to think critically and make decisions as you have been for the entire game, whether you realize it or not.
now. i am going to play pyre at 5 am on a work night good bye
