Chicago's Shamrock Shuffle 8k Reviewed
Perhaps the best part about St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago is that it doesn’t end on St. Patrick’s Day. Everyone has running the Shuffle 8k to look forward to about a week later.
This should have been published last week, but I was goofing off for Spring Break.
The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle just celebrated its 40th year. And I was proud to be part of it! I first ran it 2 years ago, but this was my first as a Chicago resident. Working at Fleet Feet Chicago I was feeling the buzz about the event for weeks.
What I learned this year is Chicago does Saint Patrick’s Day…

Look how cute my friends and I are!!!!!
8k tomorrow. didn't train. i'm fucked.
A few pictures from this morning’s race: the Shamrock Shuffle 8K. I’d say it was a huge success! My goal was under 37 min, official time was 36:36 (7:22 pace) so I smashed my goal! And managed to take 83 seconds off my PR so that's also pretty great. I left it all on the course in the last 200m, literally; I probably would have been under 36:30 if I didn't have to stop twice to throw up in those last 200m -_- Guess I pushed it a little too hard, but I’d rather push a little too hard than end up wishing I had tried harder.
Today I ran the Shamrock Shuffle for the 3rd time. But my Fitbit broke on Friday, so all physical activity is completely meaningless anyway. I kid. It really is broken though. Very sad. Anyway, somehow I summoned the strength to carry on and head to Grant Park for the traditional opening of the Chicago racing season. Despite my best hopes the weather was no warmer than last year, but at least it was less gusty (I think) and it didn’t pour directly afterward.
My goal was to beat last year’s time, something I thought would be tough 2 weeks after a race but maybe doable in the right conditions. Working against me were the tall buildings downtown (and possibly the wind?) that make it hard to get an accurate Garmin read. I don’t remember it being that skewed before. At one point I saw a 6:24 pace, which, not on this planet. (I believe that was when @seechrisrun jumped in to give me a piggyback ride?) I was also weaving a ton, almost .1 per mile, because of how crowded it was. But I must be getting better at running by feel, because I improved about a minute from last year! Reconstructing my splits from the lag between when my Garmin went off and when I actually saw the mile signs, they were: 11:28, 11:15, 11:21, 10:55 and 9:51. (I’m still somewhat doubting that last one a bit...)
I felt pretty good afterward -- great, actually, just hungry. And sore from those push-ups you all are making me do...
