Another lovely Ship Sweets week has passed. We've got 2 more delivery weekends left! It's been great having everyone together at the Kinley Café. For the most part...
Eddie and Shannon have been a big help around the kitchen. Well...Shannon has been a big help around the kitchen.
Eddie's...you know...doing his best! And we love him for it. (Maybe he should try helping out with some drinks instead?)
okay but vietnam war recruits tommy eddie and buck bonding and tommy and buck fuck one night after they both got kinda drunk after seeing something truly sickening and then couple nights after buck's leg was crushed and he had to be sent home and he doesn't wanna leave tommy and makes eddie promise to look after himself and tommy both while buck looks after shannon and christopher back stateside
tommy writing to 'buck' (because correspondence was monitored) talking about having his own orchard and never leaving the country again
buck working as hard as he can back home so he can buy land for him and tommy and shannon and chris (while people assume he and shannon were screwing while eddie was away)
eddie sent back after he was shot almost fatally and shannon and buck take care of him and chris while buck worries about tommy; eddiegets better and with him and buck working together, along with some money from their parents, they soon make enough to buy a large plot of land
maddie runs from doug and makes it to buck's new place but only maddie and shannon are there with chris when doug comes to get maddie. shannon 'accidentally' pushes him off the stairs and breaks his neck, and the local police sees two beautiful and terrified women and a sickly child and writes it off as an accident (one of the officers is athena and she does not mention anything about the discrepancies in their accounts)
and then buck gets news from medic Howie 'Chimney' Han that tommy got a piece of shrapnel into his side and he's been delirious with fever, and he'll be sent home if he can make it through the fever
buck goes to pray at the local church and meets hen and karen, and they take him under their wing as he tells them about his 'friend' and then he learns by accident that hen and karen are not 'cousins' but lovers, and he tells them that tommy isn't just his friend but the man he loves
when tommy's fever breaks and he is sent home, buck realizes he doesn't have tommy's home address. eddie comes through with it because they had more time together in vietnam
buck and maddie driving cross country to get to tommy, and once they meet kinard sr, it's maddie who says that she and tommy are to be wed 'back home, because mama and papa bought us a place already for us', and that gets tommy out of his family's clutches but now they do need a wedding
and maddie and tommy do get hitched in texas where buck and eddie have bought their land and kinard sr is appeased and he goes away. three months later he dies of a heart attack, and no one is really upset by this
and they all live together, and maddie is happy to have the protection of a marriage while tommy and buck are committed to each other, and shannon and eddie are able to ask fro help because buck, tommy and maddie are there to support them
when chimney comes a-knocking to pay tommy a visit, he and maddie are attracted to each other ("he has kind eyes") and it takes a great deal of worrying before tommy tells howie that the marriage between him and maddie is just a legality, that he's not with maddie y'know what i mean?, and chimney puts two and two together
so tommy and buck and eddie 'hire' chimney for their ranch and orchard, shannon and maddie run the business of selling the produce. officially, tommy and buck and maddie and chimney share a house, eddie and shannon and chris in a different house on the property. they build a third house for maddie and chim, but hen and karen rent that house from them. karen goes to work at johnson space center while hen trains as a doctor; denny goes to school and comes home to teach chris (he doesn't go to school because of the difficulties moving around), while chris borrows library books to share with denny. together with everyone else, denny works in the orchards at harvest time, which buck protests against at first, but denny says he is just helping his family
and then in 1967 anti-miscegenation laws are struck down in all states and that's when tommy divorces maddie so she can wed chimney, and tommy and buck build a separate, smaller house for them both, and so they all live happily together on their large plot of land
don't ask me how bobby and athena fit in here, they'll get together after 1967 for sure
Have I just realized that all of the couples of the show got kids before they got married? Yes, Yes I did.
Bobby and Athena had kids before they met and then they got married, Hen and Karen got Denny before they got married, Eddie and Shannon were pregnant and got married because of it (technically the baby was on the way before the wedding), and finally, Maddie and Chimney had Jee-yun before they got married.
Now the question is, will Buck and Tommy partake in the 911 tradition of kids before marriage or will they get married first?
many wouldn't agree but the dia de los muertos ep should have shannon diaz's ghost hunting it as much as bobby's. we can always and forever revisit how she was the love of eddie's life and how they were doomed before they even began. we should into eternity be speaking about how they loved each other in the purest, simplest ways and for that they could never make it anyway and how shannon died and eddie, the ultimate martyr and survivor's guilt aficionado, had to be the one living.
Thinking about Eddie and Shannon. And how much they really knew each other.
Timeline hand waving aside- they met around 16 or 17 probably. One maybe two years of high school together.
Chris was born when they were 19. And then Eddie left. And was gone for most of the next four years.
23 years old and youre married to someone and have a kid together but what do you really know about someone at 23 when the last time you really spent time with them was at 19?
And youre living in the same house now but the problems aren't high school problems and you don't know how to save a marriage that never really had a foundation. You're just stacked mud at the edges of the hole frantically trying not to let it all cave in on you.
And then you're separated again. You're married and you have a kid but you've spent more of your marriage apart than together, and you dont know your spouse really, but they still feel safe and fun.
But youre still just shoveling mud out of the hole and you dont know how to start over, how to stand on level ground. Maybe you never will.

Canon rewrite with Bucktommy from the start and alive Shannon??? Interest peeked immediately, tell me more please
Okay okay okay, so!
Basically, Tommy and Sal show up at the hospital after Chim’s accident, which is how Buck and Tommy meet in this one. They don't get together right away, Buck still goes through S1 dating Abby (and yes, I’m incorporating the AbbyTommy of it all because outside the timeline issues, I find it low-key hilarious) because she’s too important for his character not to.
Tommy (and Sal) will be incorporated into S1’s plot, with Tommy floating between flying and doing ground work at the 118 while Chim is out of commission. He will also get a S1 plotline of his own that revolves around his father and childhood.
I know when and where I’ll get BT together eventually (but no spoilers on that one!) but they’ll grow a lot, both apart and together as friends before that.
As for Shandie/alive Shannon, I have two distinct ideas I’m still mulling over on how I’ll do them, one where they never get divorced at all and handle their shit differently, and one where they divorce, hover around each other, and eventually get back together. I’ve not decided which one to do yet.
One other general thing I want to do with this rewrite is incorporating characters and concepts that realistically should have been in those canon scenes, but weren't either because they didn't exist yet (Chim in the hospital post-rebar now features the Lees) or because the writers decided they don't exist anymore (Albert just in general, as an example).
(Feel free to ask me about specific canon moments and how I plan to change them, if they aren't too spoilery, I’ll answer lol. I have a whole separate document where I brainstorm this topic specifically.)
