We tested Shoei's Light Transition Face Shield on the Hornet X2 during our recent trip up the California Coast. Photochromic molecules embedded in the shield enable it to quickly lighten or darken to adapt to changing light levels. With the ride passing through thick fog on the coast, then bright sunny skies above the clouds, through dark redwood forests on dirt roads, and finally rolling into camp at dawn, it was a true test of its adaptability. We found it would adjust within a minute or two, fast enough to never cause a problem during our testing. We did notice though that with the bright sun setting on one side of the helmet, it could create some mildly distracting patterns on the screen. Also, if you leave the windscreen up, the vent holes in the peak create temporary patterns on the lens when you flip it back down. Overall though, the fully-activated tint was dark enough for bright conditions and it was nice not riding with sunglasses or worrying about carrying a spare clear lens.
