The Basics (and then some)
What is selvedge? Selvedge is denim made on shuttle looms. There are old shuttle looms that Americans sold to the Japanese when American clothing manufacturers switched to a automated processes. There are also new shuttle looms that have since been created and are also in use. Shuttle looms make the process of creating denim take longer, and thus more expensive. Many people believe that because of this selvedge denim is automatically better quality than what you will find in most department stores. This is not always true. Once you start to see selvedge denim at H&M and gap you realize not all selvedge denim is created equal. These jeans have been manufactured in a cheap way. They can lose their dye very easily and ruin furniture. The construction is of low quality, and these jeans have been known to lose buttons, rivets, and even whole pockets. Not problems that you would expect in a pair of jeans from your local Walmart much less selvedge denim.
