5 Steps To Handle Sibling Rivalry... Research shows that kids under 7 fight 3-7 times every hour. For that reason, sibling rivalry was on the top of my list of things to research about! Our household with 2 boys under 5 seemed like a battlefield 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have a feeling the more we care about how our children will turn out, the tougher this parenting gig is. In the weeks, months, years of constant sibling battles, we might find ourselves questioning our parenting abilities (and sometimes even sanity). This can create a lot of stress, worry and anxiety. How will our children fit in today’s society if they can’t even get along with their own family? There are so many challenges every minute of the day while the children are learning how to behave and follow our rules (which go against their natural survival instinct) while they are tired, emotional, hungry, angry, hurt or disappointed. Often times when the siblings fight, we put our “judge and jury hat on” and we try to be fair, listen to both sides and then we come up with a “verdict”. “Who started it? Who did what to whom? Why did you do that to your brother?” Once we finished the questioning, we decide who gets what punishment and we force the guilty one to apologize and the other one gets the “poor you” attention. And I say “force” because sometimes getting a “Sorry” out of my son, is like pulling wisdom teeth that are still under the gums. And I am not sure if you have noticed, but it is usually the same child who starts the fight (because they want attention and don’t know the right way of communicating it) and the same one who ends up being the “victim”.
