"Hope is a state of harmony. Righteous and bright and all that other BS. Despair is more fun—and it grows so quickly like mushrooms over a single night. Despair is messy and confusing… and it ain't much of a picky eater. It devours love, hate, the whole shebang. Despair takes the plans you've put all your faith into, and rips 'em to shreds. You may think you're above petty human desires, but you need despair. When it's calling the shots, all bets are off. You don't wanna be bored out of your skull for the rest of forever, do ya?"
Amazon Video also seriously fucks up with the release of Danganronpa 3 for streaming.
Not only do they separate Side Future and Side Despair as two separate “seasons”, they list Side Despair (and by extension, Side Hope, the series finale) as Season 1.
If you watched it this way, not only would you get spoiled on how Episode 1 of Side Future ends, but by watching Side Hope before watching Side Future, you’re spoiling a huge number of plot points for yourself and most likely leaving you with absolutely no idea what’s going on because you’re missing 12 entire episodes worth of context.
After seeing an Aiko sprite made by @danganronpaspritefolder, I thought to myself: “I could improve on this and make it better.”
So I took it upon myself to enhance and redo Pikachu Girl’s sprite to the best of my abilities.
It takes a lot of to actually see something the way it is. I am Komahina fan. I see this ship as true and beautiful friendship with a lot of potential to be a healthy romance in the future. Even so, I don’t neglect Nanami’s influence on Hinata. She was his bright sunlight in the darkest times of his life. He changed for her, she was the reason for him to become a better person. We know that it ended up horrifying. I just… I don’t want, as Chiaki doesn’t either, to forget about her. I am going to analyze events from Hinata’s point of view from the beginning to ending. It will be long feels trip, prepare yourselves!

Hinata was probably as vulnerable as Komaeda in Despair Arc. He was lost, he didn’t feel comfortable in his skin and then as a beautiful star which crossed his galaxy - Chiaki appeared in his life. Her smile was his anchor. She found her charming and out of his reach. Yet, he wanted do believe he could be part of her galaxy. Sakakura broke his dream, broke him.
After that, Hinata is lost. He is in deep long and sluggish dream where he can’t see or hear anything. And then, in the darkness he is hearing her soft broken voice, she is trying to reach out for him. He wants to respond her. He wants to cry for help… He can’t do it. He doesn’t have a voice or will. He doesn’t exist. Yet, he struggles. He feels deep down even if he doesn’t have form.
He is crying. His soul is crashing. In a sleep without dreams, tears cannot be seen.
And suddenly… he wakes up. All he can see is a boy with messed up hair. He is trying to avoid him, make him go away but he isn’t doing it conveniently. Hinata can say for sure he isn’t reliable but his presence was calming. They are walking together, talking with each other and Hinata realizes even without remembering his talent, he doesn’t feel bad. Nagito Komaeda makes him feel safe even if Hinata’s body tense up by meeting those talented people.
Then, he meets her again. He doesn’t know how precious she is to him. Her anchor, Chiaki Nanami was right in front of him and he couldn’t say her anything. He couldn’t apologize about not coming to see her. Hinata is still nervous and salty to everyone. He hides his negative thoughts as much as he can but can’t help feeling of stress. Komaeda is trying to calm him down and Hinata believes him. He really wants to.
After that everything goes wrong. Komaeda is acting like crazy, which makes Hinata angry and sad at the same time. Chiaki is coming to his life again as bright light of candle. She is his company and strength in difficult time as she used to. He can feel strong bond with her as he did before without realizing it. Chiaki was always someone who makes him stand up on his own feet.
As his feelings for her was clear. He couldn’t say the same about Komaeda. He still felt strong bond with him but his feelings were unstable. He was feeling confused, angry, lonely and yet, he was still coming to talk to him. He wanted to understand why? Why he ended up like that? He never talked with Chiaki about her beliefs or family. He never wanted to disturb her personal space. She was his light, not an equal. Yet, with Komaeda he felt he could and should be angry, mad and distrustful… But at the same time he wanted to see what will happen if he gets hope he desired.
He lost both of them. In the darkest time he still reached out to her. Chiaki responded. Chiaki has always been for him if he needed her. Then, everything changed. He took his time and gather thoughts. He had a lot to do, rescue Komaeda was one of them. He didn’t know for sure what to expect but he found courage to accept his past and make future. He didn’t forget he wasn’t the only one who needs an anchor.
Komaeda’s and Hinata’s eyes are full of emotions when they see each other after waking up. For both of them it was first time but they feel like it was one of many. Komaeda asked with whom he was talking. Hinata replied with his past and his future.
Hinata for a long time couldn’t give up on his anchor. Chiaki was always with him, deep down. Yet, Hinata was changing and observing how Komaeda blossom like a flower. He could do anything even without his help. Hinata was worried but he knew it’s time to move on. It’s time to let Chiaki go and as she said make future, be independent. He was no longer these miserable boy without anything.
He accepted that Komaeda was his first friend as Chiaki. Then, he made a lot of them. “It isn’t a bad ending.” He couldn’t help but feel anxious about it. Yet, Chiaki is as always comforting him. That was her last time to do this. He couldn’t say it loud but she knew. He wanted to be happy, have a lot of fun even without her. She just looked at him and Komaeda with gentle expression when he turn back and smiled brightly to Komaeda.
