Sulfur Coated Urea: A Slow Release Fertilizer Alternative
Sulfur coated urea (SCU) is a fertilizer product that slowly releases nitrogen over time. It works by coating prilled or granular urea with a thin layer of elemental sulfur. This sulfur coating acts as a barrier, controlling the release of nitrogen from the urea over an extended period. The sulfur coating allows urea to degrade and release nitrogen gradually through several processes. First, moisture must penetrate the sulfur barrier. Then, the urea inside hydrates and forms ammonium carbonate. This decomposes into ammonium and carbon dioxide. Ammonium then converts to ammonia gas through a process called ammoniation. The ammonia gas slowly diffuses through microscopic pores and cracks in the coating for plant uptake.
