Geofluidic Landscape - Smout Allen

 The passage of abundant water on the Oslo site provides a source of kinetic energy that invades the building. Trenches, gullies, and reservoirs are cut into the rock to channel water and counterbalances and weights shift building pieces. The floors become walls, panels move to reveal new spaces, and garden beds are raised and tilted toward the sun.

Thesis Abstract

Deep Ecology 'argues that the natural world is a subtle balance of complex inter-relationships’

Architect and Theorist Michael Lauring argues that Ecological Architecture is loaded with a plethora of diverse definitions and has an ever changing and locally defined meaning.

I will embrace the topics of augmented landscapes and artificial natures to computational ecologies and kinetic components. Looking through performative materials and “soft technologies” within a pervasive paradigmatic case. Following sensory and actuating technologies and apparatus of geographic significance to culminate in a new Rhizome within experimental green strategies and performing instruments;

Jotted thoughts.

I've not blogged any thoughts in several days purely because I've not had any on the thesis. Now as I prepare for a very busy 3-4 weeks, as I said I would take an intermission from the thoughts as to not taint my current work for Bauhaus. Here it is. I have a few thoughts I had jotted down from when I finished Weather Architecture [WA] so I will drain my mind and notebook of them and take this hiatus, only after a couple of weeks. 

One particular part of the book I found interesting was a list of equipment a picturesque tourist would carry with them in their search for their picturesque. That excited me. I guess bring nostalgia back to me. As a kid going on these "adventures". Equipment such as the claude glass, pens, pencils, watercolours, sketchbooks, guides, pedometers, water flask, telescope and barometer. I might start to do this and see what I can find. Can I find my own 21st century picturesque? Does the picturesque exist in the 21st century?

WA has a large section, dare I say devoted to the works both practical and theoretical, to Alison and Peter Smithson. I'd heard of them but much to my dismay knew little about them until I'd read WA in it's entirety. I found them to be a brilliant link to SmoutAllen. I also idealised their idea of "adhoc" and thought there might be a phenomenological link I could exploit in my thesis. 

Peter Salter is quoted about the Smithsons, describing them as "our greatest modernist readers of context". Again I feel the same towards SmoutAllen.

I will draw the line here and regret that I have to shut this thinking down for a while to not paradoxically burn myself in the future.

I had a few ideas...

I've had a few ideas scribbled down on scraps since I got the brief... I should maybe post the brief too, it's not very exciting! They're only a few words, phrases, topics or people I want to use as the focus point.

I've been following and taking in the work of Smout Allen for about a year now;

Likewise for a lengthy period the late Lebbeus Woods has been a point of interest.

These are two inspirational factions of people whom through their works I have been able to further mine.
