This cruel but beautiful manga...
I was trying to make sense of the seething and rage I’m seeing on certain platforms and I think I might understand it.
This series has always been about a world that was cruel yet beautiful, but some readers primarily enjoyed the cruelty aspect. It's fine that they wanted a series that focused more on that cruelty - there’s no judgment to be had there - but I'd say for myself and many other readers, it was the beauty despite the cruelty that kept us reading. That made this chapter good for us.
I’m sure there are others who’ve brought up chapter 78. My mind keeps going to it as I think about Zeke. When I wrote about that chapter, it was about the contrast between Bert and Mikasa. When Mikasa was faced with the cruelty of the world, she could still look beyond it to see beauty. That gave her the strength to live. That didn’t happen with Bert. While he loved his friends, he allowed the cruelty of the world to overwhelm him. Zeke falls somewhere in between I guess. He didn’t disavow his plan entirely, but in the end he could acknowledge that beauty existed, he’d just failed to see it. Before dying he wished he’d had more time to appreciate it.
Maybe some of the unhappy readers will someday have a similar epiphany 😂This series isn’t flawless. I’ve complained plenty for sure about various aspects. But I cried at the beauty and simplicity of the message and I’m glad I’m still reading.
