“SUNBURNT MARY JANE”

Born in London, Souza moved to Jerusalem following high school to study a yeshiva next to the Machane Yehudah Market, often referred to as “The Shuk.” Founded in 1887 the market’s more than 250 vendors sell just about everything from food and spices to housewares and textiles. An increasingly popular nighttime destination, Souza’s friend Beral Hahn suggested he start painting portraits on the corrugated shutters of the closed market stalls and as of 2016 Souza had spray-painted more than 150 of the market’s 360 shutters. As Souza has made a name for himself more opportunities have followed and on a recent trip to the U.S. he did a little painting in Chicago before moving on to Los Angeles where he painted this colorful work on Seaton St. in the Arts District.  @solomonsouza  @arts_district_la
