#u2 #songsofinnocence on #coloredvinyl #2014 picked up from the mall or something when it came out. This was the album that was automatically download to everyone’s #ipod, annoying potential fans of U2 across the world. What’s worse, people couldn’t figure out how to delete it right away: “Please take this off my iPod!” This misguided marketing ploy is a sad but interesting part of U2’s history, and it really was pretty cool when you think about it—they just wanted to give their music away for once. U2 also has a long history with Apple, even releasing a version of the iPod classic that had the entire U2 catalog on it with tracks not accessible anywhere else. Still, I don’t think the people at Apple understood just how much our song collections are private spaces that we don’t like to see intruded upon. What’s even worse in my opinion is that this marketing ploy led to dozens of misguided and frankly incompetent reviews of the #album, in which reviewers gleefully attacked the marketing and never even talked about the music. And when they did talk about the music, it was usually a single line along the lines of, “musically it’s not bad.” That’s stupid. The point of an album review is the music and nothing else. At most, also the album packaging itself, the album art.
