Chapter I - Waves
She rose out of the water like she did every morning and he admired her beauty like he did every time. Her hair sparkled in the sun's rays; making her blue streaks darker than usual to match the colour of her eyes which shone as she smiled playing with the sea life. Sure she was under the moon's protection, being the ocean and all, but he liked her anyway. More that he should have considering he could never be with her. It's just her smile was too entrancing; her joy too contagious. He got to see her whenever he wished, all of her quirks and adventures. He saw her glancing at him again, it was the first time in a while but he quickly looked back at the shells in his hand that her waves had brought to him. He was there again, watching her, thinking she didn't notice. Of course she noticed; he did it so much that it seemed his only hobby besides looking through sea shells. That's why she always sent them to him; the beautiful boy who's blush was noticeable on tanned cheeks. The precious shells turned over and over by his long fingers. She'd wanted to talk to him for a while but words were hard for her; she'd never had any use for them. So she gathered all her courage and lifted an arm to wave at him, knowing she still held his attention. He looked back up to see her hand awkwardly poised in the air, a sort of half wave. He took it as an opportunity and lifted the shells in his hand. "Can i keep them? Or do you want them back?" He called out to her. She froze in surprise, not expecting that the sound of his voice would be so melodic in her ears; not expecting it to make her feel so comforted. She opened her mouth to speak but she couldn't decide what to say. There was 'no it's fine' but that was too simple. 'Keep it, they are my gift to you' seemed to forward. After mulling it over for who knows how long (time wasn't exactly relevant) she decided on the right words. "I could fill your shores with shells and still have so many more, so keep those few. If you ever want more just ask". And with those words she tossed her most prized shell to him. The shell landed in his hands. It was golden and speckled with brown, the inside a vibrant purple with pink streaks spiralling towards the shell's point. Although her voice was croaky like she had just woken up he loved the melody that it brought. He could see that she was embarrassed at the sound of her voice but he thought it was beautiful. Because it meant she was speaking to him. "You know you're beautiful, right?" He told her, almost whispering, and she noticed; a red glow reaching across her cheeks. It was the most adorable thing he had ever seen. She giggled and little bubbles started popping further out to sea. "You are too" his grin widened until it stretched across his face. "Could I see you closer" he asked wary. "I'll try" And with that she began to walk forward and the waves crashing around her grew bigger and bigger until she was so close to the shore that he could see her face clearly like he had never done before. The wave surrounding her peaked and the crest grew white foam. Just as she stepped forward the wave came crashing down and dragged her under, away from him. Her face broke the surface of the rolling mass of white and he saw a tear slipping down her cheek. In that tear he saw that because she was the ocean and he was the shore they could never be together.
