you’d think he’d be used to waiting . he once was . before all this , that is . life became so ... mundane . colorless . boring . you woke up & followed a routine to move the time until the day ended . you went to sleep . you did the same thing the next day . he hardly ever took a day off from work in an effort to minimize any stagnant time . waiting put glass over your eyes & white noise in your mind as you watched the world crumble & rise up time & time again . when he came here & remembered waiting he thought that , perhaps , he had finally found an end . things became a little brighter , a little sharper . he was searching for arthur in every face he saw again , desperate for a light at the end of the tunnel .
days passed . months passed . it’d been almost another year here . nothing . dullness was beginning to sink back in slowly . he’d fall back into the cycle soon enough , convinced that destiny had simply tricked him again . the mystery surrounding the town & what kept him there gave him a slight preoccupation but even with gwen here & even with his promise , he was still waiting . just somewhere else .
he clocked out of work . he waved goodbye to the pharmacy techs . he began the walk back to the resort . next in his plans was simply dinner then bed . then the day would repeat tomorrow . his eyes stay forward as he walks , staring but not looking much . it’s a miracle his eyes catch the sight of blond hair as he passes the gym . it’s true his mind can’t envision arthur’s features as clearly as it used to but he can still recall the sunlight shining on his hair like a crown . it did the same to this hair . he blinks & focuses on the man’s face now .
he stops . for a moment , it feels like his whole world does as well .
arthur’s face sharpens in his mind once more , the sight of him piecing anything merlin might have forgotten back instantly . ❝ arthur ... ❞ the first time he says his name is on a breath . ❝ ARTHUR ! ❞ the second time is shouted . merlin what felt like his first fresh breath in years . then he began to run . he ran because the sooner he could stop waiting , the better .
