My contribution for the Spectral Sounds exhibition:

The sound­piece “The Recording with the Sound of its own Recording” makes the recording of a recording process audible. The title refers to Robert Morris’ piece “The Box with the Sound of its own Making” from 1961 and also makes the production process of an art piece audible. In the case of “The Recording with the Sound of its own Recording” the only material used is the ambient sound of a recording studio which shapes the final result of the piece. The process­oriented structure makes multiple spaces audible: a sound studio, the recording of a sound studio, the recording of the recording of a sound studio (in a control room), and finally the propagation of these sounds in the space of the listener.

Matthew Dear Releases New EP + Videos

Matthew Dear can do it all. At once, a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, and a band leader, the New York-based producer, and co-founder of both Ghostly International and its offshoot Spectral Sound, knows no musical boundaries.

This is evident in the multi-talented New Yorker's recently released EP, Headcage, where it seems he has put on yet another new hat--collaborator. "In The Middle (I Met You There)" is Matthew Dear's first duet excursion, featuring the smooth, warbling vocals of The Drums' frontman, Jonny Pierce gliding over disjointed samples and melodic electronics. The visual accompaniment, like the EP's album art, seems to be beautiful, ever-changing layers of what looks like colored ice.

Matthew Dear also released the EP's namesake as a single. This track is a bit more experimental, featuring the musician's own deep, crooning vocals, backed by a melange of electronic sounds and samples of breathes and whispers. Its video is in the same vein as "In The Middle," but instead of shifting ice-like layers, these are almost geological patterns that slowly morph into almost perceivable images, until the track abruptly ends and we are left with a sudden flash of light.

Headstrong is a teaser for what Matthew Dear has in store in 2012. His forthcoming full-length, Beams, is set to be released this year, and he is about to embark on an international tour with a full band, as he makes his way to Austin for SXSW.
