not only was jack going off the deep end in s14 great character development but it was also hot #sendxweet. we gotta sexualize his downward spiral too
another thingy w game night and jack being a lil freak is like ,, torturing nick was not just because sam said it and jack took it literally. like he had it Out for nick from the beginning but once he tries defending himself to Mary he phrases it like “sam and dean would be grateful and i did it because nick was evil and deserved it” like he’s almost trying to justify it to himself but in reality he just wanted the man to suffer and it had very little to do w the actual crimes of nick more than jacks personal grudges
* and the thing is he is Still so like disgustingly desperate to be good and worth the Winchesters love and that’s exactly why he starts justifying himself and freaking out when Mary doesn’t buy into it even though she’s very much still willing to help him and love him it’s all such a tantalizing self fulfilling tragedy honestly
thinking back on the idea that jack is haunted/regretful of everything except nick and remembering how the actual script for that scene basically implies he only feels shame because of Mary’s horrified reaction. like they specifically say that all the pride (as in jack is PROUD of how extensively he mutilated nick) (twirls hair) curdles into shame when he looks back at her. and it’s so important to me that he looks back for like idk validation or just to see if she’s also happy that he’s dead. like a dog would look up at u to know that they did something good. but it’s especially important to me that ‘curdle’ is the descriptive word of choice here .. like his emotions r actively going thru a process of souring into something rancid just because of Mary’s reaction….
and then their argument literally starts because jack wants to be validated or maybe even reassured that he didn’t do something heinous (because of The Implications) and mary. Godddd the script literally says she loves him but can’t bring herself to lie to him….and she still loves him after that horrific sight. she still calls him sweetheart and family and wants to help him but he can’t let go of his own insecurities and worst fears setting in and it’s like the most beautiful self fulfilling tragedy ever it rlly needs more attention …. like ive always said its such an interesting mini-exploration of jacks character (all flaws considered) and the fact that it very nearly implies he regrets upsetting his emotional support chosen mother figure more than he regrets torturing a guy to death…. character of all time genuinely
Oh RIP gut instincts
MARY: His son? He said that? DEAN: He says he wants to talk to Jack… alone. MARY: No. Absolutely not. SAM: I mean-- DEAN: "I mean"? What do you mean, you mean? SAM: I-I mean… Look, finding Donatello is going slowly, Dean, and Nick is locked down in our bunker. How's he even a threat? MARY: He's always a threat.
//
The episode as produced has Mary saying this line, but I like they're both pretty uneasy with the decision.
Dean's gut was RIGHT, here, too.
And it becomes one of the things he can't look at.
This is Dean. In addition to the AW Michael of it all, and being evasive with Mary about (Byzantium, Game Night etc., so as not to worry her), he's probably spending the remainder of season 14 and season 15 going OVER and OVER this moment again in his head.
ESPECIALLY once he gets the full scope of the situation.
💔
One of the things Dean does best is ask, "Why?" It's what tipped him off beautifully about Metatron in season 8.
"What's this guy's MO?"
Here, his gut is screaming, "Why does he want Jack ALONE? There's something I'm not seeing. Something doesn't smell right. He's GOT to have an angle."
////
And you know
it a BIT reminds me of the same thing we saw play out in season 13, with Jack AND Sam both in rush-mode, and Mary and Dean, respectively, tugging the reins like WHOA HOLD UP HOLD UP
That's how Sam died there, too.
EDIT: scripts ever the amazing @spnscripthunt-inactive
EDIT 2nd: All this to say, I AGREE with Dean here. He blamed himself plenty, and there was plenty of blame to go around. Underestimated Nick at every junction was a high-key part of that, from the interrogation room right down to putting him rather loosely in the backseat of the car. Even Ketch got put in the trunk.
Here's the thing about my girl, Mary.
She will lip service a good way, the better way, a bit like Sam, but she's Samuel Campbell's daughter through and through.
She plays fast and loose, and risky (SEE: Stuck in the Middle with You). She's a BIG, BIG gambler.
She doesn't REALLY know the extent of what's going on... and she wouldn't care if she did. She'd prioritize the mission, the save, the win. The hero way! Bonus: Her son is bleeding out.
14x17
///
She knows this about herself, too, is the thing!
///
It's kind of her whole deal is the thing!
She was just like Jack... and she's still just like Jack. Or Jack's like her.
Strawberry waffle Castiel 😭😭😭😭😭
thinking really hard about game night when jacks one second away from shooting lasers into nicks skull and nick says oohhhhh you’re so tough did you know you get that toughness from yer daadddddd and u can literally see jack hesitate and snap out of it right then and there. like what do you mean he associates his temper and aggression with lucifer and actively represses it (save for instances like this) and is entirely unmasking here where his family can’t see. surely this has nothing to do with the smiley friendly boy next door personality he has so often. this precious widdle baby having actual layers or depth to his personality? that’s plain crazy talk. everyone knows he’s a sweetie cutie baby who solely exists to ship his dads together. barf
