Saint Herman
I was goofing around in school on the internet today trying to make my own business card in Adobe InDesign. I know it doesn't sound like goofing around, but the filters have gotten so smart there's not really much else to do. I was looking for some sort of photo online that I could use as a symbol, something that could adequately represent EpicUnion and who he is. I remembered that many nations choose to use saint's crosses as their flag insignias. Namely the Royal Union Flag which uses the crosses of St. George, St. Andrew, and St. Patrick. So I went looking up random patron saints to see if I could find a saint to represent me.
I looked under patron saints of the Americas on wikipedia and found an interesting name just by chance. I found an article about Saint Herman of Alaska. He was this Russian monk who went on a mission with several others to Alaska to teach and convert the Aleut natives of Alaska. Eventually he fell in love with the Aleut and helped keep the Russian colonists from exploiting them. He suffered massive beatings for his beliefs and stayed with them even after the other monks had either died or left. He established his own little hermitage on the island colony and called it New Valaam after the convent he had come from. He loved the Alaskan people so much that when a plague came to them he sat by the sick and dieing and comforted them. His love was so strong that they believed he helped cure the illness.
The Aleut tell stories about how when a tsunami came he placed a statue out on the beach and told them that the water would not go above that statue. It didn't. When a massive wildfire spread across the island Herman dug a trench and laid in it and the flames didn't pass that spot. It is said that before he died he said he would be forgotten for 30 years after his death. He died in 1837, but because there was no priest around to perform the funeral there was no record of his death until an investigation of his life was performed in 1867!
I didn't use him as my patron saint. He represents the kind of strength of character and love that I could only wish to have. I felt horrible for trying to find a Saint like him to represent me. Saints are once in century type people who represent whole nations! I'm just some kid who's bored in Competitive Writing. I have a newfound respect for people who give so willingly from the heart. Somebody who can stay and be beaten and starved and chilled for what they believe in. He died protecting and loving the people of Alaska all because he liked them. He owed them nothing.
Here's something to do. Go on Wikipedia and find a Saint. Read their story and find out what they did to deserve Sainthood. Then tell me what you think about it.
First Day.
