Hi! A simple question really, but how does one BEGIN a story?

Hey there @ghostlyturkeybananamug  :)  

I am about to give you the most annoyingly simple advice in the world… ready? 

‘Just relax and do it. ’  

 It’s super frustrating right? My brother gives this advice out all the time. It’s his go to baby. Even when you don’t ask for advice, and really don’t want any,  he gives it regularly anyway.  However, I think  in this case he’s right. 

 You  just have to start somewhere, anywhere. Literally just put pen to paper, or open a fresh document and start writing out ideas.  

Use the cliches at your fingertips if you need them.. ‘once upon a time…’ ‘ In a galaxy far far away…’ ‘Dear Diary’ ‘In a world..’  Quite often I like to start by writing as if I am telling my story to someone I know well and like, but they don’t know anyone I’m talking about. So I choose someone in real life, often my sister in law for familiarity, so that the casual voice is there, and then I start writing her a letter.  ‘Dear reader…’   These can be annoying but it’s a structure to start from. Once you’ve begun you can always come back and change things. That’s the beauty of writing, the re-write.

Some people find it helpful to write out a plan they can follow along or a timeline, a sort of brainstorming  of ideas for their book. So the ideas don’t run too far away from them while they are writing.  I start my story long before I start writing it. It emerges in the notes section of my phone or in scraps of paper on my desk and in my sketch book.  I think about the plot and then start writing later.  

 Another quick thing, ‘Enter late, Leave early.’ Start your story somewhere interesting. Begin in the action.  You can always set the scene during or after the event that you lead with. Begin with something intruiging and maybe a little mysterious to instantly enthrall your reader. 

Hope this long, not so simple response helps. Also once you begin writing,  write every day. Momentum is everything

Hello! I just saw your blog and 1. I think it's amazing and 2. I was wondering if you have any tips for starting a book. I have the majority of it planned out already but whenever I go to start writing it I just can't seem to. Do you have any advice?

Yes, I have some very infuriating advice for you. You ready?

Okay no so - 

You don’t have to start at the beginning. You just have to start.  Start anywhere. Start at the part where the really exciting thing happens. Start writing the bit that you have most planned out.  Then jump to a description of your side characters hair.  Then jump to world building… Where are your characters?  Why are they there in particular?  Write out your plan. Flesh out your characters.  Jump around like crazy, write as many words as you can about something. Once you start, you will eventually find a flow,  you’ll get really excited about writing out some weird part near the end and chase it.    

You’ll probably end up with a very messy document of paragraphs that aren’t linear and are written in different tenses and perspectives and you’re going to hate it.  But then you have something to work with. You can edit and re-write and add bits in and create sense out of your chaos. Yes, it’s infuriating, but it is also fun. The difference between a writer and everyone else, is that a writer writes. You just gotta start, and keep starting every day.

How can I write a story about a group of tiny little creatures? Blights are my own creation, but I have no idea how a third person perspective story would work with them.

Awesome!  Does it have to be a third person perspective?  What does your plot explore? Are the tiny creatures characters? Are they personified?  

My advice for the moment would be to start anywhere, and remember you can change tense and perspective later, there is always room for a rewrite.  

Try starting with something well used like “ Once upon a time, there was a tiny village of blights that lived in a forest underneath mossy rocks”  OR “Hi, I’m Joan, and I am a blight. I’ve been told to write this diary because Doctor Joanna is studying us. She’s isn’t a blight, it’s just as weird for me as it is for her.’  

 I have no idea that you are working with here  but  explore your options and try things out,  eventually you will find something that sticks.  It’s your universe,  play with it however you like! :D

to your taskmaster anon, my friends found series 4 a good place to start! it's a good mix of personalities and perhaps some familiar faces, if they've watched GBBO or mighty boosh. of course, I agree they're all worth watching so once someone's figured out the format and fallen in love with the show, I too would say, watch them all

Season 4 is a great place to start. My inclination is to start with one of the first 5 seasons before it gets a little referential. And of those I think 1 (because starting from the beginning is always good), 4 (as you say) or 5 (there's a lot of epicness in that season from many different angles).
