in the same vein as a previous ask: how did kaos’ feelings (of any kind) towards peayce develop/evolve?

also! not a question, but: i LOVE all of peayce’s different outfits and hairstyles, the variety is so much fun!! i can’t even pick a favorite, they’re all so pretty and elegant. 10/10 character design ^u^

-because Kaos is (in-universe) considered to be super ugly and undesirable, Peayce is supposed the opposite: the epitome of beauty and the apple to the eyes of many. I'm super STOKED to hear that my efforts in making her look that way are paying off.

I actually would like to shout out @ur-typical-nerd for being the main reason I started taking Peayce’s fashion more seriously. They tried to help me out with her designs really early on in her development, but my skills were NOT up to snuff at the time. I couldn't draw much of any of their suggestions...

I'm much better nowadays, but I don't think I would be if not for the experience I had with a much better designer.

-annnd now, to answer your question.

Kaos' opinion of Peayce is such a mess!

It's constantly growing and changing. The worst part of all is probably the fact that, most of the time, Kaos straight up refuses to acknowledge the fact that he holds anything in his heart for the woman other than contempt and pure hatred.

So let's go ahead and break it down for him, shall we?

(Fair Warning: This is a long, LONG answer! Be prepared for a LOT of reading below! Also, I will only be breaking down Kaos' feelings for Peayce BEFORE his redemption, because anything afterwards can get kinda spoil-y.)

Kaos' feelings toward Peayce develop in 4 main phases:

Phase 1 - Pure Antagonism

At this stage, Kaos just kinda hates Peayce for existing. To him, she is a mere obstacle.

...okay, that's not entirely true.

To him, she is a particularly frustrating obstacle he can't seem to get rid of. An insipidly nice obstacle that chooses to oppose his carefully cultivated evil plans with dumb simple things like magical flowers and singing... and somehow STILL WINS.

As a man who believes in using massive amounts of force, power, and volume to get what he wants, Kaos gets EXTREMELY frustrated with Peayce because she does NONE of those things, and YET she's still able make things happen. - things he could never hope to accomplish (like making friends)!

Phase 2 - Bonding and Confusion

Many situations start to arise where Kaos finds himself stuck together with his foe for a prolonged period of time. This could be because of required temporary teamwork (like to defeat a common enemy) or pure happenstance (like accidentally getting stuck in the same trap and being forced to sit together).

Within these little sessions, Peayce tries her best to appeal to Kaos and treat him less like a horrible villain and more like an ally/friend.

Kaos, of course, is put off by this, believing Peayce to be either stupid, crazy, a liar, or just plain pathetic. However, with every new appeal, Kaos begins to crack, opening up a little bit more each time and receiving Peayce's care with less and less pushback.

It gets to the point where the two could be accurately described as frienemies!

Phase 3 - Denial, Pretending, and Suffering

However, there comes a point when Kaos realizes what's happening to him and he begins to panic. He isn't supposed to like Peayce! That would go against everything he's trying to be! So what does he do to resolve this conflict of internal interest?

He doubles down, doing everything in his power to be even nastier than ever, while pretending he doesn't care about Peayce at all.

Unfortunately for him, this backfires tremendously.

By trying to hide his feelings so fervently, he convinces Peayce that those feelings definitely exist. As a result, she begins making even more of an effort than before to appeal to Kaos, desperately trying to convince him that he doesn't have to pretend.

Kaos, despite his best efforts, keeps slipping. His feelings for the Peayce actually grow even MORE because of the woman's refusal to give up on him. He begins to realize he WANTS her to win him over. He WANTS Peayce to connect with him. He WANTS to be her friend, and he WANTS her to love him.

Phase 4 - Fully In Love (For Better... or for Worse)

The two Portalmasters reach a sort of tragic impasse.

Both secretly care about the other, in ways they are too afraid to admit to anyone else, and both are too dedicated to being the most "good/evil" in Skylands to truly form a solid relationship.

Ignited by Peayce’s pursuit of his humanity, Kaos' burning desire for companionship, paired with his crushing loneliness and lust for control finally get the better of his pride and combine, leading to a new, rather deluded wish:

He wants Portalmaster Peayce to be with him.

-and yes, when I say "be with" him, I do mean BE WITH him.

...forever.

SO, when Kaos is not actively trying to take over the world, he dedicates all of his time and energy toward trying to convince Peayce that accompanying him in his dream of Skylands' conquest would be the best future for them both.

-and unfortunately for Peayce, the little man doesn't seem to keen on taking "no" for an answer anytime soon...
