The study of fractions is introduced with physical (and yummy) objects to experience math in a concrete way before forming mental concepts in grade 4. We were able to master the simple operation of adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. In this block, after working out the factors of numbers, we learned to expand and reduce fractions to produce equivalent fractions. With our knowledge of factors, we could find the least common multiple (LCM), which allowed us to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
