SUBLIME CINEMA #139 - TARKOVSKY’S MIRROR

How do you describe a film of such beauty? You can’t. It’s like tapping into a dream - you can only experience it yourself to understand what Tarkovsky was after. He was making images which nobody had ever dreamed of, on weird old Soviet film stock, and people still haven’t figured out how exactly he did it or what materials he used exactly.

SUBLIME CINEMA #141 - THE LAST EMPEROR

For better or worse I was in a very remote place during last years lockdown, sans internet, and only had access to a thumbdrive with a couple of movies, including this one. I watched again and again.. And again. It’s an epic film on so many levels, with glorious cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, and notable for being the first western film allowed shot in the Forbidden City, which they made sublime use of.
