Ever heard of the author David Gillespie? If not, get off my blog and go look him up, RIGHT NOW.
I’ve been aware of David’s work since he released his book ‘Sweet Poison’ and honestly, aside from my mother, no single person has had such a positive influence on my life.
Sweet poison is his first book, dictating the dangers of sugar. It’s not a diet; it’s not a healthy eating plan; he isn’t selling you anything (aside from the book itself), he is merely informing you of the damage sugar has on the human body.
Sure, I am guessing you are thinking “well that’s common sense” – but current trends clearly demonstrate its not. Instead, the dangers – and believe me, there are more than you can imagine – are ignored and dismissed, as if it is a marketing person in the shopping centre.
Sugar – otherwise known as “white gold” – is a chemical, and is poisonous to the body. Research has shown it is more addictive than caffeine, nicotine and even heroin; yet we consume it in large amounts on a daily basis.
While crystallised sugar has been in existence for thousands of years, it formed an insignificant part of the classical civilisations, and it wasn’t until the last major crusade that ended in 124 when Christians were introduced to sugar by the Saracens. However, it wasn’t really until the industrial revolution that Sugar became so readily available, and soon enough, in all facets of our diet.
When you turn the clock back 150 years, sugar was a luxury item, and therefore the average person’s daily intake was approximately 2 teaspoons. Fast forward to 2013 and you can easily get 10 teaspoons in a can of coke. However, that’s not where the issue lies. EVERYONE knows coke isn’t good for you, the issue lies in the way the food industry knows how addictive sugar is and is adding it to all products.
Addiction = consumption of more food.
Consumption of more food = company profits.
Many people who have tried to crack a sugar addiction report the same symptoms as a smoker giving up cigarettes.
It’s not brain science – when it comes to your healthy in 10 years vs. profits this year, the food company (whether it be Schweppes, Sanatorium, Kellogg’s, Arnott’s, or Coca Cola) is going to go for the immediate returns.
We are brain washed to believe in healthier options, but when you look at the content of the “better option”, the sugar content is of equal value. Too many times to count, I have seen people reach for a juice opposed to a soft drink because it is the better option – “’ just fruit, it’s good for you” – ah no, idiot. When you juice a fruit you detach all the nutritional content and are left with liquefied sugar. Which, is all well and good if a fruit juice is going to be your ONLY intake of sugar that day, however, my money is on that it’s not.
Add one piece of whole fruit to that daily intake and you’re already on a dangerous amount of sugar. Nutri-grain, Corn Flakes, White Bread and Muesli – SUGAR, SUGAR, SUGAR. A fruit juice, in any sense, is just soft drink without the bubbles.
“Oh well, it only causes weight issues and tooth decay” – if they were the only causes sugar has on the body, and they aren’t, they are enough to make you NOT want to eat it.
Weight gain alone has so many implications on the body; high cholesterol, increased blood pressure, heart strain, fatty liver disease – just to name a few.
And tooth decay accounts for $7 billion of our medical fees a year – and that’s not paid for by the government, that comes straight from our pockets.
Get the point yet? No, ok I will go on.
Cancer – while not caused directly by sugar, cancer GROWS from sugar. You have cancer and continue to eat sugar in abundant amounts; there is no way you are going to survive.
Depression – sugar has the ability to turn off your serotonin receptors, so when you binge (emotionally) to “cheer up” you are causing more mental damage to yourself than you had to start off with.
Alzheimer’s - Sugar has been proven to have an increase on Alzheimer’s, so while you may not be getting harmed now, your life expectancy is readily decreasing as my list continues.
Type 2 Diabetes – now, if the above wasn’t enough to make you wake up to yourself, how does losing a limb sound? Diabetes is one of the most devastating diseases known to man but there is not history of Type 2 Diabetes until the twentieth century. Changes in people’s lifestyle and shifts to diets containing more energy-dense foods have resulted in escalating rates in obesity and type 2 diabetes; also known as ‘diabesity’.
9 out of 10 people around the world with diabetes have type 2 diabetes; And it is recorded that approximately 1 in 25 Australians suffer from diabetes which is up from 1 in 40 less than 20 years ago (1995). Diabetes is ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in Australia (2009) and only 2 in 5 sufferers believes themselves to be in poor health.
Do you understand now? If not, I doubt David’s book will have any impact on you what so ever. But if you are on the path of recognising the dangers, acknowledging them and wanting to better your life, maybe not just for yourself, but your friends and your family – his book is a MUST read.
It’s time to re-educate society on what they are putting in their bodies. If you start with yourself, sooner or later, the pay it forward motion will come into play and together we can help create a healthier life for everyone.
