Dazed and frazzled, Blakk shrunk against her tail.  She gazed down at him, muzzle nearly touching his chest.  Haltingly, he rested a palm against her nose, as if to keep her from chomping down on him.

Belatedly, he processed the words in his head, but wasn’t sure he believed what he thought he understood from them.

“Please don’t eat me,” he whispered, voice strained.

All my SWTOR commissions from AnimeFest 2014!  I went a little nuts, I guess.  In my defense, I hardly bought any prints, so it all evens out.

I love these so much!  In the past, commissions have been a little hit or miss for me.  I've only had one of three that I really liked, not counting one that I still have to follow up on ...  But I'm really happy with these.  The artists' skill level and style varies pretty widely, but I think they're all wonderful.  I feel like a commission of an OC is a lot less demanding on my mental expectations than an established character from a fandom.  Even with inaccuracies in the portrayal of the character design, expressions, or pose/interaction, the heart of the character is still there.  And really, you do take a chance in any commission, especially those at a convention, because the artist only has a day, maybe two to make what you want, and unless something is very off from how you described it, you're stuck with what you get.  So it is something like a grab bag - best not to go in with an idea that has to be exact, and know that you'll have to be loose enough in your expectations to be happy with whatever comes out.

For reference, most of these images ran me about $40, and all were less than a full page, with the exception of the second and third image which were about full-page size.  The last two images were small 3x5 sketches for $5 each, which were totally fun and reasonable, and I could have done, like, five of them if I'd felt like it.  So, what you get for your money can vary quite a bit, but it's often dependant on skill level, too.  

Most of the artists were great to work with, but I did find it awkward at times to describe my OCs and what I wanted, especially if I didn't have a clear idea (and always go in with photo refs - I printed these out beforehand).  Sometimes it felt like the artist just wasn't interested in the character, or just wanted the reference image and nothing else except a general idea of what the character should be doing.  Maybe it's just me, but from a writer's standpoint, I feel like you need to know something of the character's personality and their relationship with other characters in the image to really properly capture them.

One of the artists, though (second image, Pineapple Banana Curry Studio), was absolutely amazing to deal with.  I felt like she really got into the characters, even helped me to come up with an image scenario by offering suggestions after I described them!  That's the kind of artist I would definitely go back to again, even if the artwork isn't the absolute best I'd seen.  I know she'd do her best to capture the spirit of the characters.  So, artists, take note - get interested in your commissioner's characters to really do them justice!  You'll make your customer feel like you really care about the characters they love and they'll come back for more.  It's the little details like that that really make the experience special.
