Seven Deadly Synths is a short fantasy comedy film from the creators of Detroit Evolution, about a bisexual musician named Seth (Maximilian Koger), who realizes his rival ex bandmate Brian may have come into the possession of a mystical, fabled synthesizer. It is set for release on Youtube this August. .

I added a few more instrument lines, and one more instrument. I experimented with adding a solo line to carry through some of it, but with all of the counterpoint already in there it just muddled it a bit. So I figured I’d keep it without a single solo line, just let each part trade off control of the piece as it moves along.

Just like pulling the lines in a web.

By the time I got to this last draft, my computer could barely handle what was going on. But I still want to learn how to mix a little better. I’m learning how to keep things from turning muddy with too much going on, and this track seemed like a perfect opportunity to practice that. So I rendered a semi-final version, and mixed that instead of trying to mix it with all of the instruments also being rendered by my poor little old computer.

I went back and forth, first doing a rough mix with my crappy computer speakers, then a more fine-tuned mix with my headphones, and lastly I put it on the big speakers in the living room to give it a final listen. There are still a couple of little things I would probably go back and change, but at this point I decided to go ahead and try to publish it for cyberpunk monday.

It wasn’t that long ago that my idea of mixing was running it through a compressor and calling it a day. I think I’ve come a little ways since then.
