World Cup 2018 only ended 15 months ago, but some Asian nations have already played six Qualifying matches for the next Finals in (sigh) Qatar. Asia is into Round 2 of Qualifying: eight Groups, the eight Group winners go on to Round 3 as well as the four best runners up.

GROUPS A-D

Group A top seeds China surprisingly drew in Philippines. Syria are at home to China next. Their attempt at Qualifying for Russia 2018 was epic. In Group B Australia have a goal difference of 15-0.

Chinese Taipei 1 Australia 7

In Group C Iran blitzed Cambodia 14-0, then five days later lost to Bahrain and fell to third place. Group D is the only Group where all five teams are challenging.

If the Eagles win the away leg against Australia, they’ll earn themselves a spot in a playoff against the CONCACAF 4th place team (currently the USA) for a spot at the 2018 Word Cup

WORLD CUP 2022 QUALIFYING: ASIA

Round 2 has finally concluded, 21 months after it began, and it’s been epic. In June 2021, 20 more teams have been eliminated, in a frantic finale, leaving 12 teams to go forward to Round 3. They are:

The Group winners:

Syria 🇸🇾 Not bad, considering the ongoing Civil War.

Syria: well done lads.

Australia 🇦🇺 8 wins out of 8.

Iran 🇮🇷 Were in real trouble before wins against Bahrain and Iraq.

Saudi Arabia🇸🇦 Won a decisive match with Uzbekistan 3-0.

Japan 🇯🇵 8 wins out of 8, goal difference +44, including a 14-0 win over Mongolia.

Yuya Osako of Japan scored three against Mongolia and five against Myanmar.

United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪 Beat Vietnam 3-2 on the final day to avoid elimination.

Ali Mabkhout of United Arab Emirates is the top scorer in all World Cup Qualifying with 11 goals.

South Korea 🇰🇷

Son Heung-Min and South Korea during the 5-0 win over Turkmenistan. South Korea only dropped two points in Round 2.

These 12 teams will compete for four places at the 2022 Finals. The team that finishes fifth will enter an inter-continental playoff. Matches begin September 2021.

Qatar are automatic qualifiers for the Finals.
