raindrops pelted against ravi’s window, steady at first, then picking up the longer the night went on. the storm only seemed to get worse with time, but he didn’t mind it. if anything, he liked the way it filled the silence, something constant in the background while he worked. he’d been tucked away in his room, completely lost in a painting he was trying to finish. once ravi got into something like that, hours passed without him noticing. sometimes days. everything else just kind of faded out. until everything went dark. the power cut out all at once, leaving him sitting there for a second in the quiet before he reached for a candle and lit it. the soft glow filled just enough of the room to keep him grounded. it didn’t take long before frankie slipped into his doorway, checking to see if he’d noticed. “power’s out everywhere?” he asked, glancing over at her. “i’ll go check it out. just wait here.” his eyes flicked briefly to the scattered mess of his space before he added, almost as an afterthought, “and try your best to ignore my chaotic set up… i was in the middle of something.”

he pushed himself up and made his way downstairs to the breaker box, flipping through switches, trying to piece it together. for a second, it seemed like something worked — he caught a bit of light coming from the top of the staircase but it didn’t last. he kept messing with it, but nothing really stuck. when he came back upstairs, a couple of rooms were still completely dark. “i don’t know,” he admitted, stepping back into his room and closing the door behind him. “i got the power back in here and the kitchen… but the rest of it’s still out.” his gaze drifted back to her, a hint of apology there. “don’t worry, though. you can stay in here tonight if you want. hopefully it doesn’t happen again.” ravi moved to sit at the edge of his bed, leaning forward slightly as he looked over at her. “besides,” he added, a small, easy smile pulling at his mouth, “i feel like i haven’t even seen my roommate all week.” he shook his head lightly. “i swear, you’re all over the place… i never know when i’m actually gonna catch you next.” he gave a casual shrug, like it wasn’t a big deal, even if he’d noticed more than he let on. “guess you’re stuck with me tonight, though.”

this isn't the right setting. there is never a ' right ' setting for these kinds of conversations, she knows that much. but this, roadside in the venue lot of a show that's just ended & adrenaline leading her rationale as she's sat parallel to someone she should not be alone with, is most certainly not it. micah has never erred on the side of caution, mindless to the fact that windows illuminated by streetlights leave nothing to the imagination, save for the fact that nothing is really going on, except, " do you think it's normal to hate your significant other sometimes ? if someone understands the sentiment, it must be you. be honest, i won't tell anyone. korede stepped out of his office, finally pulling himself away long enough to grab lunch with one of his partners. eating during the day wasn’t always a guarantee. more often than not he was buried in files, combing through details, speaking to witnesses, or tied up in court. lately, though, there had been more noise than usual. billie’s situation with her ex had people at the firm asking questions korede had no interest in entertaining. isaiah, on the other hand, wasn’t just anyone. one of the few people korede trusted to be in his corner the way he actually needed. which is exactly why the second they got in the car, isaiah didn’t waste time.

“you’ve got some explaining to do…” isaiah said.

korede kept his focus on the road, already knowing where this was going but not in any rush to offer anything up.

“i saw the invoice for the tire replacements. since when did you start covering costs for clients... especially those who aren’t actually your clients?”

a small shake of his head followed, more to himself than anything. he could admit, internally, that maybe he hadn’t thought that one through as cleanly as he usually did.

“i was helping a friend,” his tone even, controlled. “what friend?” “you don’t know her,” he said, measured as always. “i’ve known her for a long time… she just needed help. got caught up in a bad situation.” isaiah let out a quiet breath, not convinced. “that was a sloppy business move, kj. you’ve got people asking questions i can’t answer.”

honestly, korede didn’t care. not about that. his attention had been somewhere else entirely ...making sure billie was okay, that things didn’t spiral any further than they already had. “it’s handled now. everything’s taken care of,” he said, calm but firm. “i’m sorry — seriously. i should’ve given you a heads up. it just… happened fast.”

isaiah shook his head, clearly over it but not done. “i can’t recall a single time i’ve seen you have this much sympathy for someone.” korede didn’t respond. “what? you’ve got a soft spot for her or something?” that one landed a little too quick. just enough to disrupt the precision he usually carried.

“kind of—” he started, then stopped himself, like the word didn’t sit right. a short breath. “i don’t know.” isaiah glanced over, already reading between the lines. “let me guess. thought you could be her knight in shining armor?” korede rolled his eyes, but it wasn’t as dismissive as it should’ve been. “it’s not that simple. we have… history. it’s complicated.”

isaiah didn’t say anything, just looked at him — waiting.

korede exhaled quietly, like he was deciding how much to give away. “there was a time….a short period… where i thought maybe our friendship would turn into something more.” the words came slower now, more deliberate. not his usual rhythm. “but it didn’t. i was always tied up with work, always in the middle of something. and eventually she started seeing someone else.” something in his jaw tightened for a second before he smoothed it out.

“you mean the same guy whose tires she slashed?” isaiah asked, a hint of disbelief creeping in. “sounds like a real catch.”

“relax,” korede cut in, though there was a faint trace of amusement under it. “i don’t know all the details but… it seemed like he had it coming sooner or later. he was an asshole.” a slight shake of his head followed. “that part threw me, though. i always thought she was too levelheaded to end up in something like that. i don’t even know what she saw in him.” his tone softened — not dramatically, just enough to notice. “she’s smart. she’s beautiful. thoughtful in ways most people don’t even think to be. i always figured she’d… do better.”

isaiah let out a quiet laugh. “and what — date you instead?” “no,” korede said quickly, a little too clean, a little too practiced. clearly lying. isaiah just shook his head, smiling like he’d already won. “yeah, alright. look at you, man. you never got over her.” korede hugged, trying to buy more time to think of a response but he went blank. "alright, alright... that's enough. thanks again for saving my ass. i mean it."

IT'S ODD TO WAKE UP next to someone yet feel so alone, and still natalya will choose the illusion over reality every time. at least it is a warm body, an arm carelessly thrown over her waist in the early morning hours, a chest to rock her to sleep. she should've called this off weeks ago, when the inevitable feelings had roared so loudly they were no longer possible to ignore, but even then she'd insisted on this. insisted it did not hurt the nights he did not want her, when she wants him all the time. he wakes as she gets dressed, her neck craning to watch him yawn, sleepy gaze settling on her. damn that heart in her chest. « good morning, » she greets softly. « it's early, just go back to sleep. i'm gonna steal a bagel and then i'll be out of your hair. »

IT'S NOT OFTEN HE GETS the privilege of playing the rational older brother, so when the call comes he's always there — most of the time anyway. these days he rarely drinks, hyper - focused on training and his gaze set on gold medals and media coverage. it's exhausting to the point that a drunk call from dana is a much needed distraction. he keeps bumping into strangers in here though, air thick and music loud, as he searches for a familiar figure. and he finds one, albeit not the one he came for. she is a distraction though. « hello, gorgeous, » he coos softly against her ear when he's directly behind her, brown locks tickling his cheek when he leans back to sport a smile in her direction. the whole world seems to burn up around them. « and you didn't invite me ? i'm hurt, erin. »

the  storm  had  left  the  rehabilitation  center  looking  as  if  the  sea  had  tried,  for  one  violent  hour,  to  take  back  every  piece  of  itself  that  had  ever  been  carried  inland.  puddles  trembled  beneath  the  weak  outdoor  lights,  the  sand  near  the  path  had  turned  dark  and  heavy,  and  the  air  still  held  that  sharp,  electric  smell  of  rain,  salt,  wet  concrete  and  broken  leaves.  nanami  should  have  gone  home  hours  ago,  but  leaving  had  never  been  simple  when  something  living  might  still  need  her,  not  when  there  were  reports  unfinished  on  her  desk,  gloves  abandoned  beside  a  basin,  and  rescued  turtles  inside  the  building  recovering  from  hooks,  plastic,  oil,  hunger,  fear.  so  when  the  rain  finally  stopped,  she  stepped  outside  with  her  flashlight  in  hand,  boots  sinking  softly  into  the  wet  ground  as  she  crossed  the  yard  with  the  careful  patience  of  someone  who  had  learned  that  panic  rarely  saved  anything.

at  first,  the  shape  inside  one  of  the  outer  tanks  looked  like  debris  carried  in  by  the  wind,  some  torn  sheet  of  plastic  or  dark  bundle  of  soaked  cloth  that  had  fallen  where  it  did  not  belong,  and  annoyance  rose  in  her  before  fear  did,  practical  and  immediate,  because  foreign  objects  could  hurt  the  animals  and  turn  one  bad  night  into  something  worse  by  morning.  but  as  nanami  moved  closer,  the  beam  of  her  flashlight  caught  the  pale  suggestion  of  skin  beneath  the  water,  the  curve  of  something  almost  like  shoulders,  a  body  where  no  body  was  supposed  to  be,  and  her  steps  slowed  before  she  could  tell  herself  to  keep  walking.  rainwater  clung  to  her  lashes  as  she  reached  the  edge  of  the  tank,  the  whole  world  narrowing  to  that  dark  water  and  the  impossible  shape  inside  it,  and  when  she  finally  spoke,  her  voice  came  out  softer  than  she  expected,  almost  swallowed  by  the  dripping  gutters  and  the  hush  of  the  sea  beyond  the  fence.  “ who’s  there? ”

catherine  had  always  been  good  at  entering  a  room  as  if  she  were  bringing  a  little  warmth  in  with  her,  not  loudly,  not  in  the  sort  of  way  that  demanded  attention,  but  with  the  easy  brightness  of  someone  who  remembered  names,  touched  arms  in  greeting,  smiled  with  her  whole  face  before  she  could  think  better  of  it.  the  party  was  already  alive  when  she  arrived,  all  golden  lights  and  overlapping  voices,  the  kind  of  laughter  that  rose  and  folded  into  the  music  until  everything  seemed  softer  than  it  really  was,  and  for  a  while  she  let  herself  belong  to  it  without  effort.  she  moved  through  the  familiar  little  rituals  of  affection,  a  hug  here,  a  kiss  on  the  cheek  there,  a  hand  squeezed  between  both  of  hers  as  if  every  person  she  greeted  had  been  missed  in  some  private,  specific  way,  until  her  eyes  found  aries  across  the  room  and  something  inside  her  missed  a  step  so  quietly  that  no  one  else  would  have  known  the  ground  had  tilted.  she  had  not  known  he  would  be  there,  and  maybe  that  was  what  made  the  sight  of  him  feel  almost  unfair,  the  way  life  sometimes  opened  a  door  without  warning  and  placed  an  old  wound  beneath  warm  light,  dressed  like  a  person,  breathing  like  a  memory  that  had  refused  to  stay  obediently  in  the  past.

for  a  second,  catherine  only  stood  there  with  the  smile  still  on  her  mouth,  not  gone,  not  false,  simply  caught  between  what  the  evening  had  been  and  what  it  had  suddenly  become.  aries  looked  real  in  a  way  her  thoughts  of  him  never  did,  no  longer  softened  by  distance  or  sharpened  by  regret,  and  it  was  almost  ridiculous  how  quickly  her  body  remembered  what  her  pride  had  spent  so  long  trying  to  forget.  still,  catherine  was  not  cruel,  and  she  was  not  a  coward,  no  matter  how  badly  she  had  once  made  herself  look  like  both  by  leaving  without  giving  him  enough  words  to  hold  onto,  so  she  kept  moving,  greeting  everyone  as  she  had  meant  to  do,  letting  the  minutes  gather  around  her  until  she  could  trust  her  face  again.  by  the  time  she  reached  him,  the  surprise  had  settled  somewhere  deeper,  still  bright  and  painful,  but  quieter  now,  tucked  beneath  the  warmth  she  had  always  known  how  to  offer  even  when  her  hands  felt  empty.  “ well,  look  what  the  wind  brought  in.  what  a  surprise.  i  never  would’ve  imagined  finding  you  here. ”  her  gaze  lingered  for  one  careful  second  too  long,  helplessly  human  before  she  could  call  it  back,  and  when  she  spoke  again,  her  voice  held  its  sweetness  like  a  glass  held  too  delicately.  “ you’re  more  handsome  than  i  remember. ”
