Taper's Choice - The Velvet Elk Lounge, Boulder, Colorado, February 21, 2025
I caught Taper's Choice for the first time a few weeks back and had a blast. This is a band that kind of has it both ways — winking at the conventions of jam bands while also just being an awesome jam band. In Boulder, the heart of it all was the wild interplay between guitarist Dave Harrington (Darkside) and keyboardist Zach Tenorio-Miller (Arc Iris), who managed to kick things off at a remarkably high level and somehow continually elevated things throughout TC's two sets. A totally good time, captured here in an excellent recording by Ted Rockwell — though you can probably skip the closing Doors cover.
Alex Bleeker: I was joking around with Brownie from the Disco Biscuits a few months back and he said something like “We’re not a jam band, we are an alternative independent art rock improvisational ensemble!” And it’s really true! The headiest jammers don’t want to be pigeon-holed, and I get that. It took me years to just swallow my pride and describe Real Estate as Indie Rock – but let’s get real, that’s what it is. Similarly, Taper’s Choice is a jam band – full on. And we are not afraid to admit it.
Taper’s Choice :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview
Since their live debut at Gold Diggers in December of last year, Taper’s Choice have rolled through a smattering of dialed-in shows: more nights at Gold Diggers, Big Sur freakouts, New York rooftops and playing amongst the wine vines of Sonoma. Ahead of their inaugural festival later this month (Choice Fest), we caught up with the band to get a bit more detail about what’s ahead, how fast things have come together, and much more.
