A Merthur I wrote for a challenge with Tarfish
Arthur was working on his father’s farm on a breezy cool afternoon. He had been working for hours on end. His father was at a farmer meeting today in town at the pub. It was already starting to darken outside. He knew his father told him he was never supposed to be up this late so close to the woods. He remembers the explanation from when he was a kid like it was yesterday.
“Son, you must never be near the woods on the edge of our property at night” His father told him lightly so as for his little son to understand.
“But why father?” Little Arthur whined annoyed wanting to go back to the forest. He say something shiny and colourful, he wanted to investigate it further.
“Because there are monsters and beast in there unknown to man” His father exclaimed firmly to make his word final.
“okay..” Little Arthur agreed holding in his tears until he got back to his room and in his bed.
Arthur opened his eyes after his little memory and looked over at the woods. It was completely dark by now. It didn’t stop him from seeing that same exact shiny colourful thing he saw when he was a child.
Arthur was curious to see what it was so he dropped him tool and hesitantly started to walk towards the forest. “Hello, is anyone there?” He asked cautiously the closer he got.
He suddenly heard a gasp and then the colourful shiny object started to move away rapidly adorned with the sound of crunching leaves and breaking branches.
“Hey wait!” Arthur yelled running after the object. He got close enough to see that it was a person, a person with wings. It was such a fascinating thing for Arthur to see that he stopped following in shock.
Arthur started to walk back to the farm house when he lost the boy. He knew he was going to get in trouble with his father but he didn’t care since he got to see such a beautiful creature, how could people call that a monster or beast?
“NO BUTS, NOW GET TO YOUR ROOM BEFORE I TAN YOUR HIDE” Arthur’s father yelled red in the face at his son defying him.
Arthur sighed and finally complied stomping off too his room. He locked his door and sat on his bed. He bent down over the edge to pull out a box from under the bed, he opened the lid of the box and pulled out a leather bound book of blank paper. He started to draw the boy he saw earlier from memory. When he was finished he looked on in fasciation at how much the drawing resembled the boy. It was then that Arthur’s mind was made. He would see that boy again no matter what it took.
“Mother?” Merlin quietly whispered walking into his mother’s house in the underground palace of the fairies.
“Yes little Merlin?” His mother questioned softly while her golden translucent wings fluttered slightly.
“A human boy spotted me today” Merlin squeaked in fear that he would be in trouble.
“Oh really? Did this boy see like he wanted to harm you?” His mother questioned worriedly, but with a tone in her voice like she knew something he didn’t.
“No, he just seemed kind of, interested about me” Merlin shrugged unsure of how his reply came out.
“Don’t not worry then dear, maybe you should even make friends with the boy?” His mother questioned light heartedly while giggling softly.
Arthur had been walking around the forest for a while now after he snuck out of his house. He was starting to get tired so he decided to sit under the giant tree in the middle of his path. After a while he dozed off while deep in thought.
Arthur heard a little voice calling him, a soothing voice, he like this voice he decided with smiling in his sleep like an idiot.
“I SAID WAKE UP” He heard a shrill voice before he felt a smack from a tiny hand land on his cheek painfully.
“OW, What was that for!” Arthur yelled holding his cheek and then he finally looked up into the face of the boy who had slapped him.
“Hey, you are the winged boy I say yesterday” Arthur dumbly stated while pointing at Merlin.
“yes I am now stop pointing it is considered rude you oaf” Merlin rolled his eyes at this boys lack of manners while standing up and starting to walk away.
“oh, sorry about tha- wait, DID YOU JUST CALL ME AN IDIOT?” Arthur screeched standing up fast than began running after Merlin.
“Wait! Can you at least tell me your name!” Arthur called after the fast moving fairy boy.
“Merlin! Yours?” Merlin called back from atop a hill in the woods.
“Arthur, that’s a nice name, I like it!” Merlin smiled brightly while fluttering his multi-coloured wings.
“I like your name too!” Arthur replied back smiling lightly at the boy while he was at the bottom of the hill looking up at the boy.
“You might want to go home, your father should be going to wake you up in a hour” Merlin informed walking down from the hill.
“How do you know this?” Arthur cocked an eyebrow at Merlin for an answer.
“Because it is almost six in the morning by the sound of the birds and don’t most farmers sons get awaken at six?” Merlin giggled once more at this humans stupidity.
“Shit you’re right” Arthur exclaimed while starting to jog away.
“Wait!” Merlin cried suddenly to get Arthur’s attention.
Arthur turned back and looked at Merlin curiously.
“Will I ever see you again?” Merlin whispered quietly against the distance between them.
Arthur smiled lightly and jogged back over to the fairy. Merlin stared at him curiously for a few minutes before he saw Arthur taking off some sort of gem necklace.
“Of course you will” Arthur whispered softly while ghosting over the side of Merlin’s mouth lightly while tying the necklace onto Merlin’s neck. The next thing Merlin knew was that he saw Arthur jogging away again while waving back at him, and a dull ache in his heart. He knew they would meet again, but he did not know how or when, but all he knew was the next time the meet would be the second happiest moment of his life.
