A Year in Language, Day 173: Tariana Tariana is an endangered language spoken along the Vaupes River in Brazil and Colombia. It is a member of the Arawakan family of languages, which has members scattered throughout South America. Tariana is currently spoken by only 100 or so people, though the number of ethnic Tarianas number around 2,000. Many Tariana now use Tucano as their household language. Tucano is not related to Tariana, not even in the same family, but the Tucano and Tariana people have a history of intermarriage and the Tucano language has been a regional lingua franca since the late 19th century. Verbs in Tariana are marked for evidentiality, aka. how the information is known. There are five levels of evidentiality in Tariana: Visual, Non-Visual (but heard, felt, etc.), Generic Inferred (i.e. determined by virtue of common logic), Specific Inferred (determined by situational data), and Reported (secondhand).
