 Alec reached up and touched the bright silvery mask Magnus wore. He could see his own face reflected in the mask as if it were a mirror, eyes wide and blue against the glittering carnival of the Venetian ballroom. He almost did not recognize himself, he looked so happy.

Then he pushed the mask up and he could see Magnus’s face. That was better.

          “Let’s dance first,” he said.

A slow sweet song with a shivery beat began. Alec would not have thought the dance floor could become more crowded, but it happened. Dozens of masked Downworlders in formal wear who had previously been standing near the walls converged on the floor. Alec found himself standing awkwardly alone in the center of the room as couples twirled around him in unison. Crowns of thorns and towering multi-colored feathers blocked his vision. He looked around in alarm for an escape route.

Instead he saw Magnus. Magnus all in silver and black, like the night sky. “May I have this dance, sir?”

“I was coming to find you,” said Alec, a little breathless.

“I saw you coming.” Magnus’s gorgeous lips curved beneath his shining mask. “We found each other.”

Magnus always thought it was rather fitting that Warlock hearts beat slower than human hearts. There was nothing much that could make an age old immortal’s heartbeat erratic. Once you had seen it all, time and time again, excitement did not come easily. After all what wonderment was there in repetitive patterns that leave a bitter after taste of old memories? There was nothing much that could improve a scene one had seen many times before.

Which is what makes Alexander Lightwood’s presence is such a puzzle to Magnus Bane. He is a Shadowhunter. Hailing from a race so submerged in ways so archaic that Magnus thought them incapable of affecting him- always a man of the ever changing world- in anyway.

But the innocent excitement in his Shadowhunter is... so refreshing, to say the least. The brilliant curiosity, the unwavering enthusiasm, the simple eagerness to experience what the world has to offer, to experience this with Magnus, somehow makes it feel all brand new. Even to a centuries old immortal who had walked this path times before.

So Magnus Bane opens his eyes to a world he had already seen. But this time he’s not alone, holding his hand, standing by his side is Alexander Lightwood with all that is new and pure and exciting about him.

Thus when Magnus Bane gazes at the world now, what he sees is a world made new, just for him, just for them. Wrought anew with Trust, Faith and he dares to hope, Love.
