We were in Cork for a Fruit on the Table (a cookbook written by my friend Theresa) promotional event. Afterwards, we ended up at Tedo, which sounds like it should be Spanish or Latin for something, but turns out not to be. (I guess in Yoruba it means “shortage” and in Kurdish it means “WaP_SenineM_AZ”?)

They’re not joking when they say “street food from around the world”. The menu is comprehensive and interesting. I ordered a Lebanese kebab because I’m boring, and it was lovely, if a little dry. 

The restrooms stare down at you from the top of narrow stairs, daring you to enter. A cheery sign assures trepidatious patrons that they should trust in the motion-activated technology that turns on the lights. It took me two tries, but eventually it happened: the dull, barely audible click of a switch tripped, followed by the initial flicker of the neon snapping into life. I’ve never seen a bathroom where the lights weren’t on before. 

There are three compartments to the gent’s restroom. The first is an antechamber of sorts, with a sink and a drier. Further on is a urinal, and to the right a cubicle that doesn’t lock. The door jams into place and you hope you’ve turned the otherwise non-functional knob to show enough red to dissuade potential intruders.

To the left, beside the urinal, there is a floor-to-ceiling photo of a girl in a gold bikini looking out through some Venetian blinds, with too much make-up for someone clearly on her way to a swim. Her large sunglasses make it difficult to gauge her mood, but her mouth is slightly open, so maybe she’s hungry. I have no idea what the purpose of this huge photo is. If it’s supposed to be titillating, someone in the design department needs to consult a urologist, because that is neither the place nor the time.
